MISSION PHILOSOPHY

​Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters, and exclusion from healthcare.

​The Safeguarding Officer plays a pivotal role in upholding MSF’s Behavioral Commitments. Working under the technical supervision of the Safeguarding Coordinator, you will be the champion for abuse prevention, ethical conduct, and the strengthening of safe, accessible feedback mechanisms for staff, patients, and the community.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Prevention & Awareness

  • ​Lead awareness sessions for national and international staff, MoH counterparts, and suppliers on abuse prevention (SEA, harassment, discrimination, and power abuse).
  • ​Sensitize patients and communities on their rights and the expected behavior of MSF personnel.

2. Context & Risk Analysis

  • ​Identify cultural barriers, fears, and knowledge gaps that prevent individuals from reporting concerns.
  • ​Support project-level risk analysis and map local associations working on human rights and harassment prevention.

3. Reporting & Complaint Mechanisms

  • ​Establish and monitor confidential, accessible complaint channels.
  • ​Ensure staff are trained in receiving complaints with sensitivity and are aware of referral pathways.

4. Monitoring & Collaboration

  • ​Produce detailed monthly reports on safeguarding trends, risks, and barriers.
  • ​Work in synergy with the Project Coordinator, Medical Referent, and HR teams to foster a culture of accountability.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Law, Psychology, Social Communication, or a related field.
  • Experience: * 1–2 years in social work, community engagement, or safeguarding.
    • ​Experience in GBV (Gender-Based Violence) programming or abuse prevention is a strong asset.
    • ​Proven experience facilitating group discussions and workshops.
    • ​Prior humanitarian experience is highly desirable.
  • Languages: Full proficiency in English and Igbo. Knowledge of other local dialects in the project area is mandatory.
  • Competencies: High ethical standards, ability to maintain strict confidentiality, neutrality, and the capacity to build trust within vulnerable communities.
