PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The Conflict Sensitivity and Security Advisor provides high-level technical expertise to the RWVL-Nigeria project, ensuring that all interventions are conflict-sensitive and context-responsive. Funded by Global Affairs Canada, the RWVL project aims to strengthen women’s rights organizations (WROs).

This role is dual-purpose: leading comprehensive conflict sensitivity analyses to ensure “Do No Harm” programming, while simultaneously providing security advisory to mitigate threats against the organization, its staff, and its partners in evolving social dynamics.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Conflict Sensitivity & Advisory

  • Lead national and state-level conflict sensitivity analyses, mapping drivers, actors, and peacebuilding opportunities.
  • Develop context-specific briefs and advisory notes to ensure project strategies do not exacerbate local tensions.
  • Analyze the intersection of gender inequality and power dynamics with conflict drivers.

2. Security Risk Management

  • Conduct vulnerability assessments on facilities, venues, and field operations.
  • Monitor the security environment and provide time-sensitive, on-the-ground advice to leadership.
  • Carry out travel security risk assessments for project staff and build local intelligence networks.

3. Program Integration & Capacity Building

  • Integrate conflict-sensitive findings into annual workplans, partner selection, and MEL (Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning) systems.
  • Facilitate workshops for WROs and CBOs on security risk management and “Do No Harm” approaches.
  • Strengthen partner capacity for local conflict mapping and context monitoring.

4. Feminist Conflict Analysis (Added Value)

  • Apply feminist and intersectional frameworks to examine how conflict impacts women, girls, and marginalized groups differently.

PERSON SPECIFICATIONS

Education & Experience

  • Education: First degree in Peace & Conflict Studies, International Relations, Sociology, or relevant Social Sciences. A Master’s degree in Security Studies is highly desirable.
  • Experience: * Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in conflict analysis and risk assessment at national and state levels.
    • Proven track record in applying “Do No Harm” principles in development or humanitarian contexts.
    • Demonstrated experience in Political Economy Analysis (PEA) and stakeholder mapping.
    • Experience with Global Affairs Canada (GAC) projects or feminist networks is a significant asset.

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate complex dynamics into actionable program recommendations.
  • Excellent technical writing and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to work independently under a flexible, part-time (60% LOE) arrangement.
  • Deep understanding of Nigeria’s current socio-political and security landscape.

PERSONAL QUALITIES

  • Unwavering commitment to gender equality, social justice, and intersectionality.
  • High integrity, neutrality, and the ability to maintain confidentiality in sensitive contexts.
