Success Guide: Driver I (IRC Maiduguri)
To succeed as an IRC Driver in Maiduguri, you must prove that you are a “Professional Operator” rather than just a driver.
1. The Computer Literacy Factor
This role is distinct from many others because it explicitly requires Microsoft Excel and Word skills.
- The Reason: IRC uses digital logs and fleet management software. You may be asked to input mileage or fuel data into a computer.
- Interview Tip: If you have used a computer to track vehicle service dates or fuel consumption in a previous job, make sure to mention it. It will set you apart from other candidates.
2. Communication in the Field
Maiduguri is a high-security environment. You aren’t just driving; you are part of a security network.
- Radio Skills: You will use VHF/HF radios and Satellite phones. Always speak clearly and follow “radio etiquette.”
- Local Insight: Your knowledge of the Maiduguri terrain and your ability to speak Hausa or Kanuri are vital for navigating checkpoints and communicating with local communities.
3. The “Zero Tolerance” Safety Culture
IRC has a zero-tolerance policy for safety violations.
- Seatbelts: Never start the engine until every single person in the vehicle is buckled up. No exceptions.
- Speed: Adhere strictly to IRC speed limits, even if the road appears clear.
4. Mechanical Proactivity
Don’t wait for the vehicle to break down.
- Success Factor: You should be able to identify a “strange sound” in the engine before it becomes a “broken engine.” Regularly check fluid levels, tire pressure (including the spare), and battery health.
5. Essential Interview Checklist
- [ ] Valid License: Ensure your physical license is valid and not expired.
- [ ] Road Rules: Be ready to answer questions about Nigerian traffic signs and regulations.
- [ ] IRC Way: Familiarize yourself with IRC’s core values: Integrity, Service, and Accountability.
- [ ] Scenario Question: Be prepared for: “What do you do if a high-ranking staff member asks you to drive faster or ignore a safety rule?” (Answer: Politely decline and cite the IRC safety policy).
You are the primary guardian of our staff’s safety on the road. Drive with pride.
