THE ROLE OVERVIEW
The International Rescue Committee is seeking a disciplined and professional Driver I to join the Operations team in Maiduguri. Beyond basic transportation, this role requires a high degree of accountability, technical vehicle knowledge, and the ability to manage digital reporting tools. You will be responsible for the safe movement of IRC’s most valuable assets: its people and its humanitarian materials.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Transportation & Safety
- Personnel & Cargo: Provide safe and reliable transportation for IRC staff and materials across Maiduguri and surrounding project sites.
- Policy Adherence: Strictly follow IRC vehicle policies, including the mandatory 100% seatbelt usage for all passengers.
- Operational Readiness: Conduct daily vehicle checks and comprehensive pre-long distance inspections.
2. Vehicle Maintenance & Care
- Mechanical Soundness: Keep the vehicle fueled, clean, and in peak mechanical condition.
- Asset Management: Inspect and maintain all vehicle accessories and emergency tools.
- Proactive Reporting: Advise the Fleet Officer on pending vehicle inspections, insurance renewals, or any technical defects immediately.
3. Documentation & Communications
- Logistics Tracking: Maintain an accurate and up-to-date vehicle log sheet for every journey.
- Technology: Operate HF, VHF, and satellite communication equipment (training provided if necessary).
- Reporting: Use Microsoft Office tools to assist in fleet reporting and status updates.
CANDIDATE SPECIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
- Education: Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSCE).
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years as a professional driver (experience with an International NGO is highly preferred).
- License: Must possess a Valid National Driver’s License.
- Record: No history of road safety-related fines or convictions.
Technical Skills
- Driving: Excellent driving skills with a thorough knowledge of Nigerian road rules and regulations.
- Maintenance: Ability to perform routine vehicle maintenance and minor repairs.
- Computer Literacy: Full professional competency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook). This is an essential requirement for this grade of driver.
Language & Soft Skills
- Communication: Ability to speak and write English clearly.
- Advantage: Proficiency in Hausa or Kanuri is a strong asset.
- Attitude: A professional demeanor that reflects the IRC’s values and a strong team spirit.
