Success Blueprint: Nutrition Officer (PUI Katsina)
The Nutrition Officer role at PUI is distinct because of its emphasis on “Tom Brown”—a locally produced supplementary food. PUI is looking for someone who isn’t just a clinician, but a community educator who understands local nutrition solutions.
1. Highlight “Tom Brown” & MAM Treatment
Most nutrition roles focus solely on RUTF (Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food). PUI specifically highlights Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) treatment using locally available foods.
- The Strategy: In your CV, emphasize your knowledge of the Tom Brown composition (usually a mix of millet, soya beans, and groundnuts) and how you train mothers to prepare it safely.
- Keywords: “Local food supplements,” “TSFP management,” “Tom Brown preparation points,” “MAM treatment protocols.”
2. Focus on “Lead Mothers” & Support Groups
PUI uses a “Lead Mother” model for IYCF.
- Success Factor: Show that you have experience managing Care Groups or support groups. Discuss how you mentor these women to become nutrition champions in their own communities.
- Action: Mention your experience in Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) and how you use IEC materials to simplify complex health messages.
3. Emphasize “Nursing” Background
The mandatory requirement is a Diploma in Nursing. PUI wants the clinical rigor that comes with a nursing background to ensure screenings and referrals are accurate.
- Pro-Tip: Mention your ability to detect medical complications in malnourished children (e.g., edema, lack of appetite, respiratory distress) that require urgent referral to a Stabilization Center (SC).
4. Cultural & Language Proficiency (Katsina Context)
Katsina requires deep local integration.
- Language: If you speak Fulfulde in addition to Hausa, put this in bold. It is a major competitive advantage in Katsina.
- Diplomacy: Highlight your “Negotiation” and “Diplomatic” skills. Working with local authorities and IDP camp leaders requires a high degree of tact.
5. Data & Accountability
Nutrition Officers at PUI are responsible for accurate weekly reports and strengthening feedback systems.
- Technical Skill: Mention your proficiency in Excel for tracking MUAC data and reporting “Reporting Rates” and “Defaulter Rates.”
- Accountability: Discuss your experience with FCRM (Feedback and Complaint Response Mechanisms). Showing that you take community grievances seriously aligns with PUI’s values.
6. Final Application Checklist
- [ ] Nursing License: Is your nursing license up to date?
- [ ] Katsina Knowledge: Are you prepared to discuss the specific nutritional challenges in Katsina State?
- [ ] Software: Do you have the MS Office skills required for weekly reporting?
- [ ] Closing Date: Ensure your application is submitted before April 29th, 2026.
You are the bridge between clinical protocols and community-led nutrition. Apply with local insight and clinical excellence.
