Location: Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State

Employment Type: Ad-hoc Consultancy (14 Working Days)

Application Closing Date: Not Specified (Immediate Need)

POSITION OVERVIEW

Nigeria accounts for nearly 20% of global maternal deaths, with the majority caused by preventable complications such as pre-eclampsia, hemorrhage, and sepsis. To combat this, Jhpiego, with funding from the U.S. Government, is engaging clinical experts to bridge competency gaps among healthcare workers in Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities across Kebbi State. As a BEmONC Capacity Builder, you will provide intensive, on-site, hands-on training and mentoring to doctors, nurses, midwives, and CHEWs, ensuring they can perform life-saving BEmONC signal functions with confidence and precision.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Skills Standardization: Participate in a 5-day pre-training planning workshop organized by Jhpiego.
  • Advocacy & Liaison: Conduct advocacy visits to the SPHCDA and participate in post-training stakeholder debriefs.
  • On-site Training: Lead a 7-day intensive capacity-building session for an average of 6 healthcare workers at assigned PHCs.
  • Clinical Mentorship: Provide a 4-day follow-up mentoring period to strengthen the confidence and bedside competence of the trained staff.
  • Assessment: Conduct rigorous pre- and post-test assessments for all training modules.
  • Reporting: Submit comprehensive technical reports within 5 working days of completing training and mentoring phases.

CANDIDATE SPECIFICATIONS

Mandatory Requirements

  • Current Role: Must be a practicing Medical Doctor, Registered Nurse, or Registered Midwife currently working in one of the General Hospitals in Kebbi State where CEmONC training was recently conducted.
  • Licensing: Valid and up-to-date annual practicing license from the MDCN or NMCN.
  • Clinical Experience: Minimum of 5 years post-qualification bedside clinical experience in a secondary health facility in Kebbi State.
  • Recent Training: Evidence of successful completion of onsite hands-on CEmONC training (or refresher) within the last 12 months.

Technical Skills

  • Instructional Ability: Proven clinical facilitation, mentoring, and coaching skills.
  • Communication: Strong analytical and verbal/written communication skills.
  • Local Insight: Deep understanding of the maternal and newborn health landscape in Kebbi State.

CONSULTANCY DURATION (14 DAYS)

  • On-site Training: 7 days
  • Mentoring: 4 days
  • Report Writing: 2 days
  • Advocacy & Debrief: 1 day

METHOD OF APPLICATION

Interested and qualified candidates should apply via the Jhpiego global careers portal.

Jhpiego is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer.

Success Blueprint: BEmONC Capacity Builder (Kebbi)

This is a highly specific ad-hoc role. Jhpiego is not looking for general trainers; they are looking for clinical champions already embedded in the Kebbi State secondary health system who have recently been upskilled in Comprehensive Emergency Obstetrics and Newborn Care (CEmONC).

1. The “Secondary Facility” Advantage

The job description explicitly states you must be practicing in a General Hospital in Kebbi where CEmONC training was recently held.

  • The Strategy: Clearly name your current hospital and the date of your recent CEmONC training. This is the “gatekeeper” requirement—if you don’t list this, your application may be automatically filtered out.
  • Pro-Tip: Mention your specific department (e.g., O&G or Pediatrics) to show you are at the “bedside” every day.

2. Focus on “Signal Functions”

BEmONC is defined by its 7 signal functions (Injected antibiotics, oxytocics, anticonvulsants, manual removal of placenta, removal of retained products, assisted vaginal delivery, and newborn resuscitation).

  • Action: In your application, emphasize your mastery of these signal functions. Use technical terms like “Active Management of the Third Stage of Labor (AMTSL)” and “Helping Babies Breathe (HBB).”

3. Mentorship vs. Training

Jhpiego allocates 4 days specifically for mentoring. They want to see that you can transition from a “lecturer” to a “coach.”

  • Strategy: Highlight any experience you have in Clinical Supervision or mentoring junior staff/interns. Show that you understand how to build a CHEW’s or Midwife’s confidence in a rural PHC setting where resources are thin.

4. Reporting and Data Accuracy

You are required to submit reports within 5 days of completion.

  • Success Factor: Mention your ability to analyze “Pre- and Post-test” data to show knowledge gain. A Master Trainer who can prove their impact with data is highly valued.
  • Check: Ensure your CV reflects strong “Technical Writing” and “Analytical Skills.”

5. Advocacy and Diplomacy

You will be visiting the SPHCDA (State Primary Health Care Development Agency).

  • Action: Show that you understand the hierarchy of the Kebbi State health system. Mention any previous experience working with SPHCDA or LGA health teams.

6. Final Application Checklist

  • [ ] License: Is your MDCN/NMCN license scan ready? (Ensure it is up-to-date).
  • [ ] CEmONC Certificate: Do you have evidence of training within the last 12 months?
  • [ ] Location: Confirm you are currently based in Kebbi and available for the 14-day intensive period.
  • [ ] Years of Service: Does your CV clearly show 5+ years of post-MBBS or post-Nursing clinical work?

You are the clinical mentor who will ensure “no woman dies during childbirth” in Kebbi. Apply with rigor.
