Green Concern for Development (GREENCODE) is a national humanitarian and development organization with over 10 years of development interventions and humanitarian response in Nigeria. We have partnered with several INGOs and NGOs in implementing people’s centered project.

We envisage rural communities in Nigeria that are environmentally conscious, where poverty is eradicated, and social rights upheld. We work with the poor and socially excluded people, and government for the promotion of environment and human rights protection in communities that are in Nigeria, aimed at poverty reduction through education, information sharing, research, training and direct impact intervention. Job Summary:

The WASH Engineer will lead the planning, design, implementation, and supervision of water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure activities under the BHA-funded project. The role requires strong engineering expertise, community engagement skills, and coordination with stakeholders to ensure sustainable and safe WASH solutions for crisis-affected communities.

Location: Nganzai LGA, Borno State
Project: BHA-funded Project in Partnership with Save the Children International
Reports to: WASH Project Manager
Duration: 6 Months (with possibility of extension)
Start Date: As soon as possible

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and prepare detailed bills of quantities (BoQs), technical drawings, and specifications for water supply systems, latrines, bathing shelters, drainage, and other WASH facilities.
  • Oversee and supervise construction/rehabilitation of WASH infrastructure ensuring quality and compliance with national and international WASH standards.
  • Conduct technical assessments and feasibility studies in targeted communities and IDP camps to determine WASH needs.
  • Prepare tender documents and support the procurement process for construction materials and services.
  • Monitor contractor performance, ensure timely implementation, and certify completed work.
  • Train and mentor local artisans and community-based WASH committees on operation and maintenance of WASH infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with hygiene promotion and MEAL teams to ensure integrated WASH programming.
  • Ensure safety and environmental sustainability in all construction work.
  • Participate in WASH sector coordination meetings and maintain strong relationships with local authorities, partners, and beneficiaries.
  • Prepare weekly/monthly progress reports, site visit documentation, and technical completion reports.

Qualification and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil, Water Resources, or Environmental Engineering or a related discipline. Master’s degree is an added advantage.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in the design and implementation of WASH infrastructure in humanitarian or development settings.
  • Proven experience in borehole drilling supervision, water quality testing, latrine construction, and solar-powered water systems.
  • Strong knowledge of AutoCAD, EPANET, or other engineering design software.
  • Experience working with community structures and managing contractors in fragile contexts.
  • Familiarity with Nigerian WASH standards and Sphere guidelines.
  • Excellent communication and reporting skills in English; ability to speak Hausa or Kanuri is an advantage.
  • Willingness to travel frequently to hard-to-reach locations under challenging conditions.
