Main Purpose Is responsible for the quality of care, maintenance and organization of operation theatres and the supervision of OT Nurses, OT Nurse Aides and Sterilization Technicians, according to MSF protocols, values, universal hygiene standards and OT procedures in order to provide a high-quality care to the patients. Job Description Reporting to, communicating, and collaborating with the Nursing Activity Manager in order to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the OT activities, according to the protocols outlined for theatre procedures. Working together with all surgical team to achieve quality of care for patients and assisting in theater and sterilization, if necessary. Maintaining patient’s confidentiality and dignity at all times and respecting the patient’s rights and conditions, being compassionate to patient needs. Maintaining the organization of the operation theater (OT) which includes defining the daily and weekly programs in collaboration with the surgeons, anticipating the needs and adapting the planning as required. Planning and delegating the tasks to his/her team members, ensuring that the tasks are accomplished and checking that staff are respecting their work schedule. Coordinating with all departments involved with OT activities (laundry, stretcher bearers, surgical wards and ER, etc.) to ensure quality and quantity of supply and timing. Ensuring the general organization of the department, checking that care protocols and rules on security, hygiene and sepsis are followed by the health care and maintenance personnel and monitoring the quality of the global patient case management and the continuity of care. Participating in medical rounds in order to know the patients and follow the department’s activity. Encouraging daily health education sessions within the unit. Supervising and supporting the team under his/her responsibility e.g. OT Nurses, OT Nurse Aides, Sterilization Technicians and Hygienists. Planning and organizing their work (areas, days, absences, visits, holidays, etc.) and coaching them in their work with special focus on following all appropriate protocols and procedures. Ensuring the quality of care by respecting and ensuring respect of MSF OT procedures and proposing action plans to ensure the quality of hygiene, sterilization, and respect of procedures. Evaluating the implementation of OT procedures by doing regular assessments and informing the Nursing Activity Manager of the assessment results and of any problems. Ensuring that staff using medical devices are qualified and trained. Ensuring cleaning and maintenance tasks are performed according to the protocols. Reporting any malfunction to the project biomedical service. Managing the department’s stock and weekly orders (pharmacy, sterilization room and Hygienists’ items, stationary). Ensuring the follow up of the consumption of drugs, consumables and other medical material and equipment under his/her responsibility and ensuring that OT registers are well fulfilled and kept. In close collaboration with the HR department, supervising the associated HR processes (recruitment, training, induction, evaluation, potential detection, coaching, development, and communication) in order to ensure both the sizing and the amount of knowledge required. Ensuring that all the administrative procedures, patients’ data and documents are filled in correctly and registered for compiling monthly reports reflecting the activity in the department. Participating in the collection and analysis of medical data, identifying areas causing problems and implementing the necessary measures for the improvement of the service’s functioning. Promoting Quality Assurance Ensure, in collaboration with the Anesthesia Supervisor, that all OT staff properly receives every surgical candidate in the OT and that the patients are well informed and receives person-centred and safe care. Maintain and participate in updating perioperative nursing checklists (surgical safety, instrument counts, time-out protocols) to align with MSF protocols and guidelines. Perform regular chart reviews and spot-checks on nursing documentation (notes, medication charts, fluid balances) to ensure completeness and accuracy. Track key indicators such as surgical site infection (SSI) rates, post-operative complication rates, and patient length of stay. Conduct daily audits of sterilization logs, sterilization indicators, and autoclave cycle records. Oversee the routine descaling of autoclaves, ensuring it is performed consistently and on schedule. Ensure that the OT team participate in morbidity and mortality reviews to drive improvements and ensure the best possible outcomes for mothers, neonates, and obstetric fistula patients. Championing Operating Theatre Organization and Maintenance Manage the setup, equipment checks, and inventory of the operating theatres to guarantee readiness for all procedures. Coordinate in collaboration with Surgeons and Anaesthesia team the general flow of surgical interventions in the OT to optimize operations. Coordinate routine maintenance and prompt repairs of all OT/Sterilization medical instruments and materials to uphold a safe, functional environment. Ensure availability of adequate pharmacy, logistical supplies, and equipment for uninterrupted OT and sterilization activities while also tracking their stock levels and closely monitoring expirations. Promote the optimization of service delivery through ensuring the efficient use of resources and proactive advocacy for staffing or material needs. Ensure temperature, air-exchange rates, and positive-pressure differentials meet MSF and local IPC standards. Guiding Staff Performance and Professional Growth Prepare monthly duty rosters, assign, and balance shifts for OT Nurses and Sterilization Technicians based on competency and caseload. Define clear KPIs (e.g., adherence to time-out protocol, turn-around times, documentation quality) and review them regularly. Conduct regular performance reviews, identify training needs, and support ongoing skills development. Organize regular CMEs, simulation drills (e.g., emergency C-section response), and cross-training in sterilization techniques. Lead and mentor OT Nurses, and Sterilization Technicians, fostering professional growth and teamwork. Lead monthly team meetings to review updates, share best practices, and strengthen communication. Driving Excellence in Infection Prevention and Control Uphold full compliance with MSF and universal IPC protocols by ensuring that all OT/Sterilization personnel and visitors follow established standards for work attire, hand hygiene, and other infection prevention measures. Collaborate with the IPC Supervisor and Biomedical Technician to enforce hand hygiene, OT cleaning schedules (in-between patients, daily, weekly, or bi-weekly), waste segregation, safe disposal practices, and equipment decontamination per MSF and IPC standards. Deliver regular training and refreshers on hand hygiene, PPE use, and environmental cleaning in collaboration with the IPC Supervisor. Supervise safe handling of sterilized packs, adherence to “clean‐dirty” flow, and proper instrument storage. Oversee biweekly deep cleaning of floors, walls, and equipment per MSF IPC protocols, record completion in cleaning schedules. Implement and uphold hand hygiene protocols before and after every patient interaction using the WHO moments of hand hygiene as a guide. Educate and guide families and visitors on the importance of IPC measures, including hand hygiene and visitation policies, to prevent infection transmission. Be sure to wear the appropriate work attire. Watches, bracelets, rings, and other jewelry should be taken off prior to commencement of work. Packing up lengthy hair is important. Contribute to a culture of safety by modeling exemplary IPC practices and encouraging others to do the same. Leading Strategic Communication & Collaborative Culture Ensure that the team maintain respectful, effective, professional, and empathetic communication with patients, patient relatives, and multidisciplinary teams (Maternity, ICU, NBU, VVF, Blood Bank, etc.) as well as during care delivery, patient transfer, rounds, and end-of-shift handovers. Facilitate seamless transfer of patients to and from the OT in coordination with Surgeons, Anaesthetists, and Ward Supervisors and Staff. Liaise with Maternity, ICU, NBU, Obstetric Fistula, and other teams to synchronize equipment requests, and emergency responses. Lead morning briefings and structured end-of-shift handovers to ensure continuity of care. Maintain up-to-date communication tools (whiteboards, electronic logs, messaging groups) to coordinate department activities and overall resource availability. Address conflicts or misunderstandings promptly, modeling a professional, solution-oriented culture. Upholding Protocol & Values Adherence Champion adherence to MSF perioperative standards by ensuring accurate Operating Theatre admissions, optimum intraoperative care, timely Recovery Room discharges in line with discharge criteria, as well as seamless patient handovers to designated care units. Facilitate rapid dissemination of new or revised guidelines to all OT and sterilization staff. Model and reinforce impartiality, neutrality, and respect in every patient interaction - especially for vulnerable obstetric fistula and emergency cases. Protect patient autonomy, confidentiality, and privacy; ensure informed consent processes are consistently followed. Ensuring Proper Documentation & Data Management Oversee accurate completion of nursing notes, medication charts, fluid balance charts, and all perioperative documentation. Ensure timely data entry of key indicators for monitoring, evaluation, and SitRep development. Conduct monthly patient-file audits and share findings with staff and management for continuous quality improvement. Encourage transparent incident and near-miss reporting, lead debrief sessions, and ensure follow-up on corrective action plans. Represent the OT/Sterilization unit in project-level strategy meetings, advocating for resources and highlighting successes. The above-mentioned responsibilities are not exhaustive. REQUIREMENTS Education:Essential Nursing diploma Experience:Essential minimum of 2 years of previous experience as an OT Nurse working in MSF or other NGOs and in developing countries is desirable. REMUNERATION According to MSF salary scale plus 13th month allowance equivalent to 1 month of gross salary.
