This Senior Accountant position is critically important, as it safeguards the organization’s financial health and ensures that every contractual commitment is meticulously fulfilled. By providing expert oversight of treasury operations and financial reporting, you will directly enable FHI 360’s complex, integrated projects to run smoothly, securing the foundation upon which lasting human development solutions are built.
Job Summary
Reporting to the Deputy Director of Finance, the Senior Accountant will assume primary responsibility for executing high-quality accounting functions within the Country Office. The role is tasked with maintaining operational liquidity, delivering accurate financial statements, and ensuring absolute compliance with all internal policies and external donor financial regulations across all supported programs.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Operations & Treasury Management
- Cash Flow Leadership: Direct daily Country Office treasury activities, including monitoring the cash position, preparing weekly cash advance requests for the Hub, and ensuring adequate liquidity for operational needs.
- Banking Relations: Act as the primary interface for all Country Office banking relationships and accurately manage records for all bank accounts and signing mandates.
- Transaction Recording: Ensure precise recording of all intercompany transfers and third-party cash movements.
Payment Processing & Compliance
- High-Volume Payments: Lead the end-to-end payment process across various organizational platforms (DPA, GFAS, GAPS), monitoring payment statuses and coordinating internal reviews for timely disbursement.
- Statutory Remittance: Prepare detailed monthly schedules for Pay As You Earn (PAYE), Withholding Tax (WHT), and other necessary statutory remittances, ensuring timely and full legal compliance.
- Internal Control: Support state and project finance teams by reviewing payment documentation to guarantee accuracy and completeness before final processing.
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Monthly Closures: Coordinate and validate the monthly submission of the Country Office balance sheet, taking responsibility for the accuracy of all entries prior to final submission.
- Program Monitoring: Prepare essential pipeline reports for assigned projects and conduct comprehensive analysis of project expenditures against approved budgets.
- Reporting Assistance: Contribute to the preparation of detailed monthly and annual financial reports, including subproject financial status updates and required supporting documentation.
Audit, Budget Support & Documentation
- Audit Preparation: Facilitate internal and external audits by efficiently retrieving and collating necessary supporting financial documentation upon request.
- Budget Support: Assist in monitoring subproject spending against approved work plans and support business development efforts by aiding in the preparation of budgets for new proposals.
- Records Integrity: Ensure the meticulous maintenance of all core accounting records, including checking accounts, equipment ledgers, and inventory registers.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education & Certifications
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree (BS/BA) or recognized equivalent in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
- Advanced Degree (Optional): Master’s Degree (MS/MA) in a relevant field is a plus.
- Professional Certification: A globally recognized certification (CPA, ACA, ACCA or equivalent) is a distinct advantage.
Experience Profile
- Experience Level: 5–7 years of relevant professional accounting experience with a Bachelor’s degree, or 3–5 years with a Master’s degree.
- Development Focus: Minimum of 3–4 years of demonstrated experience specifically in accounting or financial management within international development or humanitarian programs.
- Donor Knowledge: Previous practical experience with US Government (DOS/USAID) funded programs and familiarity with NGO financial structures in Nigeria is highly desirable.
Technical Skills & Abilities
- Accounting Expertise: Strong foundational and practical knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), budgeting theory, and robust fiscal control practices.
- Software Proficiency: Advanced skills in automated accounting software, database programs, and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel proficiency for financial analysis is essential).
- Communication: Highly developed written and verbal communication skills for clear financial explanation and reporting.
- Integrity: Proven ability to handle highly sensitive financial and quantitative information with absolute confidentiality, precision, and integrity.
- Travel: Willingness to travel domestically within Nigeria approximately 25% of the time to support field offices.
