Job Overview/Summary
The Stabilization Center Medical Doctor will serve as the clinical lead responsible for running the day-to-day activities of the Anka General Hospital Stabilization Center (SC), the Women and Children Welfare Center (WCWC) Anka, and the pediatric unit of General Hospital Anka.
Reporting to the Health and Nutrition Manager, this role ensures the implementation of quality clinical care for children admitted to these units in accordance with National and international standards. The Medical Doctor will provide technical oversight, identify gaps, and take necessary steps to address them, focusing on system strengthening and the promotion of childhood nutrition, especially for the most vulnerable groups.
This position involves direct supervision and capacity building of MoH seconded staff to ensure high professionalism and quality service delivery across the SC, pediatric unit, and CMAM program.
Major Responsibilities
I. Clinical and Operational Management
- Oversee the day-to-day planning, clinical services, and management of children at the nutrition stabilization Centre in collaboration with MoH staff.
- Provide clinical care to complicated cases of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) admitted at the SC, in line with the National CMAM guideline.
- Support outpatient consultation and inpatient care for all under-five children in Anka General Hospital and WCWC Anka.
- Oversee night coverage services provided to admitted cases and their caregivers at the stabilization center.
- Ensure and role model respect for the dignity of the patients and the accompanying caretaker.
- Ensure that mothers/caretakers are well informed about the functioning of the center, the state, and the evolution of their children.
II. Supply Chain and Logistics
- Daily calculation of therapeutic milk (F-75, F-100, Resomal) needed for inpatient treatments based on the number of children present.
- Quantify, forecast, and order Nutrition commodities and data tools for the SC in collaboration with the hospital dietician and MoH doctors.
- Prepare drug consumption reports, quantify, forecast, and order necessary drugs for the SC in collaboration with MoH doctors/hospital pharmacist.
- Monitor the stock of commodities, medicines, and medical supplies: calculate needs, and decide quantities for delivery to the SC.
- Plan logistics and materials needs for the SC in collaboration with the program support officer.
III. Data Management, Reporting, and M&E
- Ensure daily records of all referred and admitted cases of SAM with medical complications in the facility register.
- Compile weekly and monthly reports and submit them to the Health and Nutrition Manager, hospital/state leadership, and the Nutrition cluster.
- Conduct monthly SC Audits/reviews in collaboration with MoH, develop action plans, and follow up on implementation.
- Provide regular feedback on SC reviews to the hospital team to take appropriate action.
- Ensure timely collection, compilation, and analysis of quality data, and produce quantitative and qualitative reports regarding all activities.
IV. Program Learning & Development
- Conduct regular assessments to identify gaps in the management of SAM with medical complications at the SC.
- Design studies and gather data on patient outcomes, treatment success rates, mortality, and default rates to inform evidence-based decisions.
- Document lessons learned and produce case studies related to patient care (at least one per quarter) and properly document success stories.
- Analyze patient records and treatment data to track trends, identify challenges, and provide actionable recommendations to improve case management.
- Develop tools for ongoing monitoring and evaluation, including dashboards for real-time analysis of SC performance.
V. Staff Performance & Capacity Building
- Supervise, coach, train, and mentor direct-report MoH staff on relevant technical and management competencies.
- Provide on-the-job training to MoH staff on stabilization care.
- Work collaboratively with the Nutrition and Health Capacity Building Officer and provide supervision to Nurses, Nutrition Assistants, and Dietitians.
- Hold high-quality meetings with direct reports on a regular and predictable basis, at least monthly, providing regular and timely performance feedback.
- Promote and monitor staff care and well-being.
VI. Coordination & Representation
- Participate in Health and Nutrition Sector technical working group and technical Coordination meetings at Anka LGA, as required.
- Work in close coordination with UNICEF and WHO to improve the capacities of the MoH staff on inpatient management.
- Facilitate planning processes at LGA levels to ensure an inclusive approach that engages stakeholders and communities.
- Facilitate integration of services for a holistic approach to SAM by working in collaboration with partners.
Job Requirements
Education
- Medical Doctor (M.D.)
Work Experience
- 2 to 3 years’ working experience.
Demonstrated Skills and Competencies
- Demonstrated technical skills in the clinical management of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) with complications.
- Demonstrated strong managerial and leadership competencies, including supervision and capacity building of multidisciplinary teams.
- A strong commitment to child health and nutrition promotion.
Languages
- Proficiency in English and Hausa is required.
Computer/Other Tech Requirements
- Full professional competency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
