Strategy Guide: Landing the Kano Planning Consultancy
1. The “Subnational Tailoring” (SNT) Advantage
The Malaria Consortium is moving away from “one-size-fits-all” strategies. They want someone who understands Subnational Tailoring.
- In your application: Use terms like “epidemiological stratification,” “intervention mixes,” and “context-specific health system evidence.”
- Evidence-Based: Emphasize your ability to take complex data (malaria prevalence, health facility density) and turn it into an actionable “Operational Plan.”
2. The Kano Context (44 LGAs)
Managing 44 LGAs is a massive coordination task.
- Showcase your Network: Highlight your existing relationships with the Kano State Ministry of Health (SMoH), SMEP, and SPHCDA.
- Logistics: Mention your readiness to move across different clusters in Kano, showing you understand the geographical and security layout of the state.
3. PhD vs. Experience
The advert asks for a PhD or equivalent experience.
- If you don’t have a PhD, your 12+ years of experience must be clearly categorized into Policy Development, State-level Planning, and Research.
- Highlight any “Campaign” experience (e.g., leading a previous ITN mass distribution or SMC round).
4. Critical Submission Tips
- No Payments: Malaria Consortium never asks for money. If you encounter a request for payment, it is a scam.
- Rolling Basis: This means they might hire someone by April 25th if they find a good fit. Apply today.
- Form Accuracy: The note says “Applicants who do not follow this specification will be disqualified.” Ensure every single box in the Google Form/Application Link is filled accurately.
5. Deliverables-Focused CV
Your CV for this role should not just list jobs; it should list outputs. Mention:
- ”Developed the [Year] State Malaria Operational Plan.”
- ”Led the training of [Number] health officers across [Number] LGAs.”
- ”Authored consultancy reports for [Donor Name, e.g., USAID, Global Fund].”

RE: APPLICATION FOR NATIONAL CONSULTANT (PLANNING) – KANO STATE
Dear Hiring Committee,
I am writing to express my strong interest in the National Consultant (Planning) position for Kano State. As a resident of Kano with a [PhD/Equivalent Senior Experience] in Public Health and over [Number] years of experience in health systems strengthening, I possess the technical depth and local contextual knowledge required to lead this data-driven planning process.
My career has been defined by my work with the Kano State Ministry of Health, SMEP, and various international partners to translate health evidence into policy. I am particularly expert in the Subnational Tailoring (SNT) of malaria interventions. I understand that the intervention mix required in a high-burden rural LGA in Kano differs significantly from the needs of the metropolitan LGAs.
My expertise aligns perfectly with your specific tasks:
- Strategic Planning: I have led the development and consolidation of multiple State Malaria Operational Plans (MOP), ensuring the seamless integration of ITN and SMC campaign data.
- Capacity Building: I am a seasoned facilitator, having led numerous participatory workshops for state and LGA-level stakeholders to co-design health interventions.
- Data-Driven Decision Making: I have extensive experience using stratification information and rapid health system assessments to optimize resource allocation.
I am a self-motivated professional who thrives under the pressure of tight deadlines and is committed to the highest standards of report writing and documentation. I am ready to deploy immediately to support the cascade of refresher trainings across all 44 LGAs of Kano.
Thank you for your time and for considering my application for this vital consultancy.
Sincerely,
