Part 2: The Enumerator’s Success Guide

A guide for applicants to excel in the selection process and field operations.

1. Application Strategy

To increase your chances of being shortlisted by LANI Group, ensure your application highlights:

  • Local Knowledge: Emphasize how long you have lived in your LGA and your familiarity with the terrain.
  • Tech Savvy: Mention any experience with CAPI (Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing) tools like KoboCollect, ODK, or Survey123.
  • Integrity: Highlight your commitment to data accuracy and ethical research.

2. Best Practices for Field Data Collection

Once engaged, follow these “Gold Rules” for successful enumeration:

A. The First Impression

  • Approach: Always start with a polite greeting in the preferred local language.
  • Introduction: Clearly state who you are and that you are representing LANI Group.
  • Consent: Always explain the purpose of the survey and obtain verbal or written consent before starting.

B. Data Quality Management

  • Neutrality: Never lead the respondent toward a specific answer. Read questions exactly as written.
  • Probing: If an answer is unclear, use neutral probing techniques (e.g., “Can you tell me more about that?”) to get a complete response.
  • Review: Double-check every entry before leaving the respondent’s location to ensure no fields are accidentally skipped.

C. Safety and Ethics

  • Confidentiality: Assure respondents that their data is anonymous. Never share respondent info with third parties.
  • Safety First: Do not enter environments where you feel unsafe. Report any security concerns immediately to your Supervisor.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Respect local customs, dress codes, and traditional hierarchies within the communities.

3. Checklist for Deployment

If selected, ensure you have the following ready for the field:

  1. Fully Charged Device: If using a mobile phone for data entry, ensure the battery is optimized.
  2. Power Bank: Essential for long days in areas with limited power access.
  3. Identification: Always carry your LANI Group field ID or authorization letter.
  4. Field Kit: Comfortable walking shoes, a notebook, a pen, and a water bottle.

LANI Group is an equal-opportunity engagement body. We value accuracy, professional conduct, and community-driven insights.
