Job Summary
The ITP Doctor is a senior clinical position responsible for the medical management and high-level decision-making for children admitted with complicated Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM). You will lead ward rounds, manage clinical emergencies, and ensure that every treatment plan aligns with both national standards and innovative research protocols. Your expertise will be the driving force behind the successful stabilization and recovery of the project’s most critical patients.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Oversight & Ward Management
- Medical Leadership: Direct the delivery of intensive medical care for hospitalized children, ensuring strict adherence to the National Guidelines for the Management of SAM.
- Strategic Ward Rounds: Lead multidisciplinary rounds three times weekly alongside nurses and nutrition assistants to conduct comprehensive clinical evaluations.
- Treatment Calibration: Monitor patient progress in real-time and adjust medical interventions in close consultation with the ITP Consultant.
- Detailed Documentation: Maintain rigorous clinical notes and patient records following examinations, procedures, and daily rounds.
Emergency & 24/7 Coverage
- Rapid Response: Provide immediate intervention during clinical emergencies, including advanced procedures like cardiopulmonary resuscitation and difficult venous access (cannulation).
- Continuous Care: Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation to ensure that a qualified physician is always available for the ward’s urgent needs.
- Professional Handovers: Facilitate the seamless transition of patient care through structured and detailed handovers between clinical shifts.
Operational Stewardship & Research
- Nutritional Monitoring: Oversee the timing and accuracy of therapeutic feeding schedules to ensure medical stability.
- Antibiotic Stewardship: Manage all pharmaceutical prescriptions with a focus on clinical guidelines and the responsible use of antibiotics.
- Clinical Research: Partner with the technical team to conduct innovative research aimed at improving the cost-effectiveness and success rates of malnutrition treatment.

- Experience: Previous experience in pediatrics or nutrition-focused programs is highly preferred.
- NYSC: Completion of the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program is required.
