Gender Based Violence Officer (GBVO)

In humanitarian crises, the protection of women and girls is not just a priority—it is a moral imperative. As a Gender Based Violence (GBV) Officer with CATAI, you will be the lead advocate and technical expert for survivors in Madagali, Adamawa. This role is designed for a compassionate, highly skilled professional ready to manage life-saving response services, oversee ethical data systems, and foster a community where violence is no longer tolerated. Join us in our mission to replace trauma with resilience through empowerment and specialized care.

Job Summary

The GBV Officer provides technical oversight and operational leadership for all GBV prevention and response interventions in the Madagali field site. Reporting to the GBV Coordinator, you will supervise a team of Caseworkers to ensure that survivors receive holistic, rights-based support. You will be the guardian of the GBV Information Management System (GBVIMS), ensuring that every data point is handled with the highest ethical standards. Your goal is to strengthen referral pathways and create Safe Spaces where women and girls can access resources and rebuild their lives with dignity.

Key Responsibilities

Survivor-Centered Response & Technical Oversight

  • Case Management Supervision: Oversee daily GBV case management services, ensuring all caseworkers adhere to survivor-centered principles and “Do No Harm” protocols.
  • Information Management (GBVIMS): Serve as the technical lead for the GBVIMS, managing intake forms, incident classification, and data validation with absolute confidentiality.
  • Service Integration: Work with health and protection teams to ensure survivors have immediate access to Clinical Management of Rape (CMR), MHPSS, and legal services.
  • Safe Spaces (WGSS): Facilitate the management of Women and Girls’ Safe Spaces, including the establishment of information desks for Sexual Reproductive Health.

Capacity Building & Advocacy

  • Staff Mentorship: Design and deliver continuous training for GBV staff, volunteers, and school counselors on case management SOPs and ethical reporting.
  • Community Engagement: Lead awareness-raising initiatives and develop tailored IEC materials to promote GBV prevention and encourage safe reporting.
  • Government Liaison: Build the capacity of local partners and State Ministry of Health (SMOH) staff in humanitarian GBV standards.

Monitoring, Evaluation & Reporting

  • Data Synthesis: Translate GBVIMS data into programmatic insights, identifying trends and gaps to inform evidence-based project adjustments.
  • Strategic Reporting: Produce high-quality monthly narrative and statistical reports, including weekly case updates for senior management.
  • Quality Assurance: Conduct regular field visits to monitor the impact of interventions and ensure adherence to Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) guidelines.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Gender Studies, Development Studies, or a related humanitarian field.
  • Experience: 3–4 years of professional humanitarian experience, including at least 2 years of direct clinical or case management work with GBV survivors.
  • Technical Mastery: Proven expertise in GBVIMS navigation, including consent management and anonymized reporting. Experience with health-focused organizations is a significant plus.
  • International Standards: Deep knowledge of the IASC GBV Guidelines, Core Humanitarian Standards (CHS), and survivor-centered rights-based approaches.
  • Regional Context: Prior experience working in North-East or North-West Nigeria is highly desirable.
  • Communication: Exceptional narrative report-writing skills and fluency in English. Proficiency in local languages of the BAY states is a major asset.

Why This Role is Important

Madagali is a high-need area where displacement and conflict have exacerbated the risks of exploitation. This position is critical because it ensures that survivors are not just “managed,” but empowered. By maintaining an ethical database and a robust referral network, you ensure that every survivor receives the specific medical and legal attention they need, while simultaneously working to dismantle the cultural barriers that allow GBV to persist.

Benefits of Joining CATAI

  • Technical Leadership: Take full ownership of GBVIMS data and field-level strategy.
  • Mission Impact: Directly contribute to CATAI’s HDP (Humanitarian, Development, and Peacebuilding) Nexus approach.
