As the global demand for sustainable cocoa grows, the integration of technology into farming practices is no longer optional—it is essential. The Field Officer (AgriTech) is at the forefront of this digital revolution in Cross River State. By bridging the gap between data-driven insights and traditional farming, you empower cocoa producers to increase their yields, improve their livelihoods, and protect the local landscape. Your work ensures that innovation reaches the last mile, transforming how farming communities interact with the global supply chain.
Organization: Beyond Beans Foundation (ETG)
Location: Ikom, Cross River State, Nigeria
Employment Type: Full-Time
Job Summary
Based in our Ikom office, the AgriTech Officer will be a key driver in the implementation and monitoring of our digital agricultural systems. We are looking for a tech-comfortable agronomist to manage field-level data collection, supervise farmer training, and ensure that our sustainability standards—including Rainforest Alliance (RA) requirements—are met with precision. You will be the eyes and ears on the ground, ensuring that digital tools translate into real-world productivity for our partner farmers.
Key Responsibilities
Digital Data & Farm Documentation
- Farmer Profiling: Utilize digital data collection tools to capture accurate demographic data, map farm boundaries, and document farmer contracts.
- Technical Assessments: Conduct thorough on-field inspections, performing risk assessments and yield estimations to build a robust database for external audits.
- Systems Support: Assist in maintaining the Internal Management System (IMS), ensuring all field data is clean, up-to-date, and useful for project tracking.
Project Implementation & Standards
- Sustainability Compliance: Implement the yearly work plan in alignment with Rainforest Alliance (RA) standards and specific client requirements.
- Farmer Education: Supervise Farmer Field Schools (FFS) and identify influential “Lead Farmers” to facilitate step-down training on sustainable agricultural techniques.
- Resource Coordination: Oversee the distribution and appropriate use of agricultural inputs while participating in the project’s risk management processes.
Reporting & Storytelling
- Progress Tracking: Deliver regular, detailed reports on field activities and milestones.
- Impact Communication: Identify and document “success stories” from the field, highlighting how AgriTech interventions are changing lives in cocoa-growing communities.
What Skills & Qualifications are Needed?
- Academic Background: A Bachelor’s Degree (BA/BSc/HND) in Agronomy, Agricultural Science, or a closely related field.
- Practical Experience: Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience in crop production. Specific experience within the cocoa sector is highly desirable.
- Digital Literacy: Proven experience using digital data collection tools (e.g., ODK, KoboToolbox, or specialized AgriTech apps) and proficiency in basic computer applications.
- Certification Knowledge: Familiarity with Rainforest Alliance (RA) Certification standards is a significant advantage.
- Field Agility: A proactive mindset with the ability to mobilize and work effectively with rural farmers in remote cocoa-growing communities.
- Work Ethic: Ability to work independently under minimal supervision and thrive in a high-pressure, results-oriented environment.
Why This Job is Important
Agriculture is the backbone of the Cross River economy, but it faces challenges from climate change and market volatility. This role is important because it provides farmers with the digital identity and technical support they need to become more resilient. By ensuring data accuracy and standard compliance, you help secure the certifications that allow Nigerian cocoa to compete on the world stage.
Benefits of Applying
- Innovation-Led Growth: Work at the intersection of technology and agriculture in a rapidly expanding foundation.
- Career Development: Gain specialized experience in international sustainability standards (Rainforest Alliance).
- Community Impact: Directly influence the economic empowerment of smallholder farmers in Cross River State.
- Competitive Package: Beyond Beans offers a competitive salary and the opportunity to work with a globally recognized organization (ETG).
