The Power of Evidence in Humanitarian Action
In the field of development, every data point represents a human story and a choice for future intervention. The MEARL Assistant ensures that these stories are captured accurately, providing the evidence needed to prove that our programs are truly changing lives. By maintaining high standards of accountability and learning, you empower our teams to move beyond “doing work” to “creating impact,” ensuring that every resource is used to its maximum potential for the women and girls of Adamawa.
Job Summary
The MEARL Assistant is a foundational role responsible for supporting the technical systems that track the progress of our Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) project. You will assist in the design of monitoring frameworks, oversee field-level data collection, and ensure that our organization remains transparent and responsive to the feedback of the communities we serve.
Key Responsibilities
I. Data Management and Technical Support
- Evidence Gathering: Lead the frontline collection, verification, and cleaning of field data to ensure it aligns with the project’s overarching MEARL framework.
- Database Maintenance: Develop and update digital and physical project archives, ensuring that all program documentation is organized and easily accessible for auditing.
- Assessment Support: Provide logistical and technical assistance during baseline surveys, midline reviews, and final project evaluations to measure long-term change.
II. Accountability and Community Feedback
- Responsiveness: Actively facilitate community-level feedback and complaint response mechanisms, ensuring that the voices of beneficiaries directly influence program adjustments.
- Ethical Standards: Uphold the highest levels of data ethics, ensuring the absolute confidentiality of beneficiary information and the dignity of all participants during research.
- AAP Integration: Support the implementation of “Accountability to Affected Populations” (AAP) principles across all field activities.
III. Learning and Reporting
- Insight Documentation: Assist in organizing reflection sessions and learning workshops to capture best practices and “what works” in SRHR programming.
- Collaborative Reporting: Contribute accurate data and analytical sections to internal progress reports and formal submissions for international donors.
- Field Coordination: Work closely with project officers to translate monitoring data into actionable insights for daily program management.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Educational Background: A Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Monitoring & Evaluation, Economics, or the Social Sciences.
- Professional Experience: Minimum of 2 years of practical experience in a MEAL/MEARL capacity within the humanitarian or development sector.
- Technical Skills: * Advanced proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is a mandatory requirement.
- Hands-on experience with digital data collection tools (e.g., KoboToolbox, ODK) and an understanding of results-based monitoring.
- Analytical Ability: Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify trends in raw data and translate them into clear, written summaries.
- Logistical Readiness: Willingness to travel frequently to remote project sites across the four target LGAs in Adamawa State.
Why This Job is Important
The MEARL Assistant is the guardian of the project’s integrity. Without your work, it is impossible to verify if we are reaching the most vulnerable or if our health interventions are effective. By identifying challenges early through data, you allow the organization to pivot and improve, ultimately ensuring that we fulfill our promise to the girls and women of Northeast Nigeria.
