At INTERSOS, the GBV Specialist serves as a strategic lead in ensuring that survivors receive dignified, survivor-centered care and that communities are empowered to dismantle the structures that perpetuate violence. By providing high-level technical guidance and designing culturally sensitive prevention measures, this role ensures that our humanitarian response not only saves lives but restores the dignity and safety of the most vulnerable women, girls, and marginalized individuals.

Job Summary

We are seeking a seasoned protection professional to define the strategy, framework, and technical standards for our GBV response in Nigeria. Reporting to the Protection Coordinator, the successful candidate will develop specialized tools, build the capacity of field teams, and ensure that all GBV interventions align with international humanitarian principles and the INTERSOS mission of solidarity and equality.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Strategy Development

  • Framework Design: Establish and refine the mission’s GBV response framework, ensuring it aligns with the Global Protection Framework and the specific context of Northeast Nigeria.
  • Risk Assessment: Utilize participatory community mapping to identify GBV risks and contributing factors affecting diverse demographic groups.
  • Prevention & Mitigation: Design targeted protection measures for women and girls while developing specific resources to engage men and boys in violence prevention.
  • Specialized Response: Ensure the GBV response is inclusive, addressing the unique needs of teen/youth populations as well as male survivors of violence.
  • Advocacy & Thought Leadership: Author position papers on critical GBV risks and design culturally embedded awareness materials using traditional community communication channels.

Technical Quality & Coordination

  • Programmatic Support: Provide expert technical guidance to protection staff, ensuring that case management and home visits are conducted with the highest ethical standards.
  • Capacity Building: Organize and deliver advanced workshops for both protection and non-protection staff to mainstream gender components across all sectors of the mission.
  • Standardization: Adapt and roll out internal and global GBV guidelines to ensure harmony and cohesion across multiple implementation sites.
  • Strategic Analysis: Periodically update protection situation analyses and trend reports to inform advocacy, policy work, and new project proposals.

Data Management & Ethical Oversight

  • Information Systems: Provide technical oversight for the GBVIMS (Gender-Based Violence Information Management System), ensuring data is synchronized, analyzed, and reported accurately.
  • Ethical Standards: Guarantee that all protection data is collected, processed, and archived in strict adherence to international data protection protocols and WHO ethical guidelines.
  • Monitoring & Evaluation: Conduct regular field visits to monitor the quality of program delivery and support the development of robust beneficiary complaint mechanisms.

Partnerships & Representation

  • External Relations: Represent INTERSOS at relevant national and field-level clusters, working groups, and meetings with UN agencies, donors, and government authorities.
  • Collaborative Advocacy: Work with stakeholders to advocate for the respect of human rights and the implementation of minimum protection standards.
  • Networking: Liaise with GBV Specialists in other missions to exchange best practices and innovative resources.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Educational Background: HND or University Degree in Social Sciences, Psychology, Social Work, Human Rights, or International Humanitarian Law.
  • Professional Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in the protection sector, with at least 2 years specifically managing GBV programs in a field-based humanitarian setting.
  • Technical Mastery: Deep understanding of international GBV standards and the ability to lead multi-sectoral, survivor-centered services.
  • Analytical Skills: Proven ability to conduct conflict and gender analysis to inform strategic programming.
  • Prevention Expertise: Demonstrated experience in implementing primary prevention strategies, preferably in partnership with local organizations.
  • Soft Skills: Exceptional diplomatic and networking skills, with the ability to navigate complex relationships with authorities and donors.
  • Technical Tools: Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience with GBVIMS and other digital monitoring systems.
