The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), established in 1960 as an auxiliary to public authorities, operates on the principles of transparency and humanity. As the Branch Communications and PMEAL Officer for the Sokoto State Branch, you hold a critical dual-function role. You are responsible for documenting our life-saving work through compelling storytelling while simultaneously building the rigorous monitoring systems that ensure our programs are effective, accountable, and driven by evidence.
Job Summary
The Branch Communications and PMEAL Officer serves as the lead for both external relations and internal program quality. Reporting to the Branch Secretary, you will manage the branch’s public profile and media relations while overseeing the Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (PMEAL) framework. Your role ensures that the NRCS not only does good work but can prove its impact through data and share that impact with the world.
Key Responsibilities
Communications & Public Relations
- Media Relations: Act as the primary point of contact for local media; draft press releases, coordinate interviews, and manage the branch’s social media presence to enhance visibility.
- Content Creation: Produce high-quality human-interest stories, photos, and videos that document the impact of Red Cross interventions in Sokoto State for donors and the public.
- Crisis Communications: Support the Branch Secretary in managing the Society’s reputation during emergencies, ensuring accurate and timely information flow.
- Branding: Ensure all branch activities and materials strictly adhere to NRCS branding and emblem use guidelines.
PMEAL (Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, & Learning)
- Monitoring Frameworks: Develop and implement project-specific monitoring tools and logical frameworks to track progress against humanitarian targets.
- Data Management: Oversee the collection, analysis, and visualization of program data, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality at all levels.
- Evaluation & Learning: Lead mid-term and end-of-project evaluations; facilitate “Lessons Learned” sessions to ensure continuous improvement in program design.
- Accountability: Establish and manage Community Feedback and Response Mechanisms (CFRM) to ensure beneficiaries have a voice in our programming.
- Reporting: Compile comprehensive quarterly and annual narrative reports that integrate quantitative data with qualitative impact stories for the National Headquarters (NHQ).
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Education: University Degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Mass Communication, Project Management, or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in communications, journalism, or M&E within a humanitarian/NGO context.
- Technical Mastery: Proficiency in data collection tools (e.g., KoboCollect, ODK) and basic graphic design or photo/video editing software is a significant advantage.
- Analytical Thinking: Strong ability to analyze complex data sets and translate them into simple, compelling narratives.
- Leadership: Proven ability to lead change, manage strategic relationships, and influence program design through evidence.
- Communication: Exceptional writing and storytelling skills in English. Fluency in Hausa is essential for capturing beneficiary stories and managing community feedback.
