Job Summary
The MHPSS Officer will design and implement mental health and psychosocial support activities for communities affected by crisis in Maiduguri. The role focuses on promoting wellbeing, addressing mental health needs, and strengthening community-based support systems. The successful candidate will work closely with partners to deliver integrated, people-centered MHPSS interventions.
Key Responsibilities
Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Programming
- Plan and deliver MHPSS interventions that support emotional wellbeing and resilience.
- Provide psychological first aid to individuals experiencing distress and refer complex cases appropriately.
- Support access to professional mental health services, including assessment and treatment referrals.
- Integrate mental health and psychosocial considerations into emergency and recovery programmes.
Community-Based Support and Resilience Building
- Facilitate family and community support activities that strengthen social networks.
- Promote positive coping strategies and community participation through inclusive activities.
- Support initiatives such as art, sports, and cultural engagement that enhance social cohesion.
Awareness, Education, and Advocacy
- Conduct mental health awareness sessions to reduce stigma and encourage help-seeking.
- Share information on psychosocial wellbeing and available support services.
- Promote community ownership and individual agency in mental health initiatives.
Coordination and Multi-Sectoral Collaboration
- Work collaboratively with health, protection, and education actors to ensure holistic support.
- Participate in coordination meetings and contribute to integrated service delivery.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or HND in psychology, social work, counseling, public health, or a related field.
- Master’s degree is an added advantage.
- Between two and seven years of relevant experience in MHPSS or humanitarian programming.
- Practical experience delivering psychosocial support in emergency or post-conflict settings.
- Strong communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work sensitively with diverse and vulnerable populations.
- Commitment to ethical practice, confidentiality, and community-based approaches.
