Specialized Technician

In a medical emergency, a hospital is only as effective as the infrastructure supporting it. Without electricity, functioning medical devices, or clean water systems, life-saving care comes to a halt. As a Specialized Technician with MSF, you are the technical backbone of our medical operations. Your expertise ensures that generators stay running, biomedical equipment remains calibrated, and facilities are safe, directly enabling our doctors and nurses to provide uninterrupted care to populations in distress.

Location: Akwa, Anambra State, Nigeria

Position Type: Full-Time (Definite Period)

Application Deadline: January 12, 2026

Organization: Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) / Doctors Without Borders

Job Summary

The Specialized Technician performs complex installations, preventative maintenance, and high-level repairs across MSF’s physical infrastructure and technical equipment. Operating with a high degree of autonomy, you will apply specialized knowledge in electricity, mechanics, or biomedical engineering to ensure all systems meet rigorous MSF international standards. You will serve as both a technical lead and a mentor, troubleshooting critical failures and training staff to maximize the lifespan of essential humanitarian assets.

Key Responsibilities

Advanced Technical Operations & Maintenance

  • Execute complex installations and repairs for electrical systems, HVAC units, plumbing, and mechanical infrastructure according to MSF safety protocols.
  • Conduct specialized maintenance on biomedical equipment (ITFC and ATFC devices) to ensure clinical accuracy and patient safety.
  • Implement and manage a strict “chronogram” of technical activities to ensure routine checks are never missed.
  • Troubleshoot system failures autonomously, providing immediate solutions to minimize operational downtime.

Facility & Asset Management

  • Maintain an up-to-date inventory of technical assets and specialized tools, ensuring everything is accounted for and in peak working condition.
  • Monitor power systems by conducting weekly documented checks on all functional generators.
  • Oversee the safety and functionality of facility components, including water boilers, pumps, motors, and fire extinguishers.
  • Utilize software tools like Microsoft Office and AutoCAD (preferred) to document technical layouts and maintenance schedules.

Supply Chain & Stock Control

  • Manage the stock levels of technical consumables and spare parts, initiating orders to prevent shortages that could compromise medical activities.
  • Coordinate with the Supply team to conduct physical inventories of electrical and biomedical components.
  • Ensure the workspace is kept to professional standards, with all record books and maintenance logs completed accurately.

Team Leadership & Capacity Building

  • Train the Logistics team and medical staff on the proper use and basic maintenance of technical and biomedical equipment to improve user autonomy.
  • Supervise small teams of workers for specific facility projects or maintenance drives.
  • Act as a technical advisor to the Logistics Supervisor, providing backup support and status reports on all infrastructure health.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Education: Essential Degree or Diploma in Electrical Engineering or a closely related technical field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in a similar role. Previous experience with MSF or another international NGO is highly desirable.
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) guidelines and construction follow-up.
  • Languages: Proficiency in English is required; fluency in the local language (Igbo) is essential for effective coordination in the Anambra context.
  • Software: High proficiency in Microsoft Office; proficiency in AutoCAD is a significant advantage.

Essential Skills for Success

  • Problem-Solving: The ability to find creative and robust solutions in environments with limited resources.
  • Autonomy: A self-starter who can manage complex workloads and prioritize urgent repairs without constant supervision.
  • Integrity: Adherence to MSF’s charter and principles, including a commitment to providing assistance regardless of race, religion, or politics.
  • Attention to Detail: Rigorous documentation of maintenance logs to ensure long-term system reliability.

Why This Job Matters

MSF works where the need is greatest, often in areas with fragile public infrastructure. Your role is the “fail-safe” for our clinics. By maintaining the cold chain for vaccines and the power for surgical suites, you are an active participant in the medical act. Your technical precision translates directly into lives saved.

Benefits and Compensation

  • Salary: Competitive (Based on MSF’s national staff salary grid).
  • Impact: Join a world-renowned Nobel Peace Prize-winning organization.
  • Professional Ethics: Work in an environment that prioritizes medical ethics, transparency, and equal opportunity.
