Disability Inclusion Assistant

True humanitarian impact is measured by how well we reach those most likely to be left behind. As the Disability Inclusion Assistant with Chabash Development and Health Initiative (CDHI), you will be the lead advocate for an “Integrated Approach” to aid. Your mission is to ensure that our food security, nutrition, and health programs are not just available, but accessible and responsive to the unique needs of persons with disabilities, pregnant and lactating women, and vulnerable children. Join us in dismantling barriers and building a truly inclusive humanitarian response in Borno State.

Job Summary

The Disability Inclusion Assistant provides technical support to the CDHI team and partners to guide gender and disability-inclusive programming. Reporting to the Livelihood Officer and working under the technical guidance of the FSL Manager, you will ensure that all project activities address the specific barriers faced by people with disabilities (PWDs). From conducting disability audits to adapting communication materials, you will ensure that inclusion is mainstreamed throughout the project cycle, from design and implementation to monitoring and evaluation.

Key Responsibilities

Inclusive Program Implementation & Management

  • Capacity Building: Lead internal and partner training on gender-responsive and disability-inclusive service delivery, ensuring staff are equipped to support PWDs with dignity.
  • Disability Audits: Conduct regular physical and social accessibility audits at project sites; identify and address gaps in service delivery for children, women, and the elderly with disabilities.
  • Advocacy & Messaging: Formulate key disability-inclusion messages based on project assessments to be used in community engagement and IEC (Information, Education, and Communication) materials.
  • Strategy Adaptation: Monitor the evolving landscape of disability rights and issues in Northeast Nigeria, adapting project strategies to address emerging needs such as SGBV prevention and nutrition for PWDs.
  • Intersectionality: Ensure the project planning accounts for the intersection of gender, age, and disability, particularly for pregnant and lactating girls with physical or cognitive impairments.

Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability & Learning (MEAL)

  • Inclusive Data: Collaborate with the MEAL team to track project indicators specifically related to gender and disability inclusion.
  • Disaggregated Reporting: Assist in the collection, analysis, and reporting of disability-disaggregated data to provide a clear picture of project reach and impact.
  • Participatory Learning: Ensure that beneficiaries with disabilities are actively consulted during project evaluations and learning sessions.

Partnership & External Engagement

  • Stakeholder Networking: Develop and maintain a network of civil society organizations, NGOs, and government agencies focused on disability rights.
  • Working Group Representation: Participate in State-level gender and disability working groups, providing technical oversight and sharing CDHI’s lessons learned.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or HND in Social Sciences, Development Studies, Gender Studies, or a related field. An advanced degree is a plus.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience implementing gender and inclusion programs in humanitarian or development settings (Nutrition or SRH experience preferred).
  • Technical Knowledge: Proven ability to apply the principles of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) within a project cycle.
  • Strategic Communication: Experience in designing or supporting gender-transformative social and behavior change communication (SBCC) interventions.
  • Soft Skills: High level of empathy, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
  • Languages: Fluency in English and local languages spoken in Borno (e.g., Hausa, Kanuri) is highly desirable.

Why This Role is Important

Individuals with disabilities are often the most marginalized during crises. This role is critical because it moves beyond “blanket” aid to “targeted” support. By conducting disability audits and adapting our tools, you ensure that a mother with a disability can access nutrition services as easily as anyone else, and that a child with a physical impairment is not excluded from our livelihood or education initiatives.

Core Competencies

  • Analytical Thinking: Identifying hidden barriers to inclusion.
  • Ethical Standards: Maintaining strict data confidentiality and survivor-centered approaches.
  • Adaptive Learning: Improving project tools based on beneficiary feedback.
