Safety and Security Officer

In the heart of Nigeria’s most challenging humanitarian landscapes, the ability to deliver aid safely is our greatest priority. As the Safety and Security Officer for Save the Slum Initiative (STSI) in Pulka, Borno, you are the guardian of our mission. Your expertise allows our teams to reach the most vulnerable populations with the peace of mind that their safety is being professionally managed. This role is a call to dedicated security professionals who believe that strategic risk management is the foundation of effective humanitarian action.

Job Summary

The Safety and Security Officer is responsible for the design, implementation, and oversight of organizational safety protocols across all field locations in Borno State. Reporting to senior management, you will provide hands-on leadership to protect STSI’s staff, assets, and reputation. By maintaining constant situational awareness and fostering a culture of safety, you ensure that our life-saving programs in WASH, Health, and Nutrition can continue without interruption in volatile areas.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Risk Management

  • Assessment & Planning: Conduct comprehensive Security Risk Assessments (SRAs) and develop adaptive Security Management Plans tailored to the Pulka context.
  • Situational Monitoring: Maintain a 24/7 pulse on the local security environment, providing real-time alerts, advisories, and briefings to field teams and management.
  • Movement Control: Manage journey logs and communication protocols to ensure all staff movements are tracked and secured.

Incident Response & Operational Continuity

  • Crisis Focal Point: Lead the reporting and documentation of security incidents or “near-misses,” conducting thorough analyses to prevent future recurrences.
  • Physical Security: Oversee the safety of STSI offices, guesthouses, and warehouses, ensuring robust access control and asset protection.
  • Emergency Readiness: Organize fire drills, evacuation simulations, and contingency exercises to ensure the team is prepared for any escalation.

Capacity Building & Liaison

  • Staff Inductions: Deliver vital safety briefings for all new personnel, consultants, and visitors to the Borno field office.
  • Inter-Agency Coordination: Represent STSI at INGO/NGO security forums and liaise with local authorities and community leaders to ensure humanitarian access.
  • Logistical Synergy: Work closely with the logistics team to enforce road safety compliance and vehicle maintenance standards.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Education: University degree in Security Management, Disaster Management, International Relations, or a related Social Science field.
  • Professional Experience: A minimum of three (3) years of dedicated safety and security experience, specifically within a humanitarian or NGO context.
  • Contextual Knowledge: Deep understanding of the Nigerian security landscape, particularly the operational complexities of the North-East region.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in MS Office and experience in drafting professional incident reports and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Language: Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required. Proficiency in local languages spoken in Borno is a significant advantage.
  • Core Values: A high degree of integrity, the ability to remain calm under extreme pressure, and a commitment to humanitarian principles (neutrality and impartiality).

Why This Role is Important

Pulka remains a sensitive area where the need for humanitarian aid is immense, but the risks are real. This position is critical because it enables “duty of care.” Without a robust security framework, schools remain closed, clinics go unsupplied, and aid workers cannot reach those in need. Your work directly enables the delivery of clean water, nutrition, and healthcare to thousands of displaced persons and vulnerable community members.

Benefits of Joining STSI

  • Direct Impact: Play a pivotal role in one of the most significant humanitarian responses in West Africa.
  • Professional Leadership: Take ownership of security strategies in a complex field environment.
  • Inclusive Culture: Join an organization that values diversity and is committed to an environment free from harassment and exploitation.

Salary & Compensation

  • Expectation: Competitive / NGO standard for Borno State field operations.
