Environmental Health Supervisor: Guarding Public Health in Anambra

In the face of infectious disease outbreaks and environmental crises, the difference between a health catastrophe and a controlled response often lies in the quality of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH). As an Environmental Health Supervisor with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), you are a frontline defender against water-borne and vector-borne diseases like Cholera and Lassa Fever. Your expertise in environmental engineering and infection prevention directly transforms the living conditions of vulnerable populations, turning high-risk environments into safe havens for recovery and health.

Job Summary

The Environmental Health Supervisor leads the technical implementation and oversight of WASH activities within MSF projects in Akwa and the wider South-East region. You will manage a diverse range of interventions—including water supply systems, waste management, and vector control—to ensure that our medical facilities and surrounding communities meet the highest international standards of environmental safety and outbreak preparedness.

Core Responsibilities

WASH Infrastructure & Technical Oversight

  • Coordinate the design and construction of critical environmental health installations, including the drilling/rehabilitation of boreholes and well construction.
  • Supervise the daily operation of water supply systems, excreta disposal, and medical waste management units at the project level.
  • Manage technical equipment for Watsan (Water and Sanitation) activities, ensuring rapid repair and consistent maintenance of all machinery.
  • Conduct regular “Insecticide Residual Spraying” (IRS) and chemical vector control measures to mitigate the risk of malaria and other zoonotic diseases.

Outbreak Prevention & Emergency Response (EPREP)

  • Lead early detection efforts for environmentally linked diseases (e.g., Lassa fever, Cholera) through rigorous risk assessments and surveillance.
  • Strengthen Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) practices within health facilities to reduce environmental exposure risks for patients and staff.
  • Support emergency interventions during floods or public health emergencies, ensuring that stocks, transport, and personnel are ready for immediate deployment.

Operational Management & HR

  • Manage the complete HR lifecycle for your team, including recruitment, training, and performance evaluations to maintain a high-knowledge technical workforce.
  • Oversee the inventory and distribution of sanitation materials, tracking monthly consumption of water treatment chemicals and hygiene tools.
  • Coordinate with community leaders and health authorities to ensure that environmental interventions are sustainable and locally supported.

Dignity and Gender-Sensitive Integration

  • Ensure that all WASH facilities (such as latrines and bathing areas) are designed with a gender-sensitive lens, prioritizing the privacy, safety, and dignity of survivors of violence.

Candidate Profile: Skills & Qualifications

  • Educational Foundation: Degree or Diploma in Environmental Health, Environmental Science, or a related field. Specialized certification in Water and Sanitation is highly desirable.
  • Professional Experience: 2–3 years of programming experience in Environmental Health or WASH. Preference is given to those with a background in technical works (construction/engineering) and emergency response.
  • Disease Knowledge: A deep understanding of disease transmission mechanisms (fecal-oral, waterborne, and vector-borne) is essential.
  • Contextual Expertise: Familiarity with the specific environmental health risks in Anambra State and the South-East region.
  • Languages: Full professional proficiency in both Igbo and English is mandatory.
  • Digital Literacy: Ability to use computer applications for data collection, indicator analysis, and professional reporting.

Why This Role is Important

Anambra faces unique challenges from seasonal flooding to endemic Lassa fever. As the Environmental Health Supervisor, you are the person who ensures that the water patients drink is safe, the waste the hospital produces is non-toxic, and the vectors that carry disease are kept at bay. You don’t just treat the symptoms of a crisis; you manage the environment to prevent the crisis from happening in the first place.

Benefits of Joining MSF

  • Competitive Compensation: We provide a salary package that is competitive and reflective of the NGO sector’s leadership standards.
  • Humanitarian Leadership: Take on a supervisory role with significant autonomy in a world-renowned medical organization.
  • Specialized Training: Access to MSF’s internal protocols and global expertise in WASH and IPC.
