Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Officer at Novel Alliance for Development Aid

In the humanitarian landscape of Northeast Nigeria, the protection of women and children is not just a program—it is a moral imperative. Gender-Based Violence (GBV) remains a critical threat to the safety and recovery of communities affected by conflict, requiring specialized, survivor-centered interventions. By joining this mission, you will become a vital advocate for those at greatest risk, ensuring that survivors find a pathway to healing, justice, and reintegration in a safe and supportive environment.

Job Summary

The GBV Officer is a key technical lead responsible for the design, oversight, and quality of protection services within our field operations. You will manage a dedicated team of case workers, providing the professional mentorship needed to handle complex cases involving women, girls, and children formerly associated with armed groups. Your primary mission is to ensure that every survivor receives high-quality, confidential, and compassionate care that adheres to the strictest international humanitarian standards.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Oversight & Case Management

  • Survivor-Centered Care: Ensure all survivors, particularly children and those at high risk, receive individualized case management through the rigorous application of standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • System Design: Establish and maintain robust referral pathways and information management systems to ensure comprehensive identification, response, and follow-up.
  • Database Management: Oversee the GBV Information Management System (GBV IMS), ensuring data is updated, analyzed for trends, and managed with absolute confidentiality in partnership with state ministries.
  • Integrated Referrals: Collaborate with health, education, and livelihood teams to ensure survivors have access to mental health support, psychosocial services, and economic empowerment.

Leadership & Team Empowerment

  • Capacity Building: Conduct regular assessments and provide ongoing coaching, mentoring, and technical training to the case management team to enhance service quality.
  • Supervision & Review: Lead regular case review meetings and conferences to reflect on progress, address challenges, and integrate lessons learned into program design.
  • Staff Development: Manage the recruitment, orientation, and performance evaluation of Case Workers, fostering a professional and supportive team spirit.

Coordination & Strategic Reintegration

  • Inter-Agency Liaison: Coordinate with other GBV service providers and represent the organization in relevant clusters and working groups to project NADA’s contributions to protection efforts.
  • Reintegration Support: Lead activities specifically designed for the successful reintegration of women and children formerly associated with armed groups, ensuring their safety and social acceptance.
  • Policy Compliance: Guarantee that all interventions uphold the Core Humanitarian Standards, Child Protection Minimum Standards, and Emergency GBV Guidelines.

Qualifications & Requirements

Academic Background

  • Essential: A University Degree (BA/BSc) in Social Work, Psychology, Social Sciences, Public Health, Human Rights, or a related discipline.

Professional Experience

  • Humanitarian Background: 4 to 10 years of experience in implementing GBV or child protection programs, specifically within humanitarian or development settings.
  • Direct Service: Minimum of 2 years of direct experience providing gender-sensitive counseling and case management to survivors of abuse and exploitation.
  • Management: Proven history of supervising and mentoring diverse teams in high-pressure, cross-cultural environments.

Essential Skills & Knowledge

  • Standards Mastery: Strong working knowledge of Sphere, GBV IMS, and international child protection methodologies.
  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to plan and solve problems in unpredictable operating environments while maintaining a survivor-first approach.
  • Digital Literacy: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience managing sensitive databases.
  • Language: Fluency in English and at least one local language (Hausa, Kanuri, or Fulfulde) is essential.

Why This Role is Important

In Borno and Yobe states, the scars of conflict often remain hidden. This role is essential because it brings those survivors out of the shadows. By providing professional case management, you prevent further harm, reduce the stigma associated with violence, and empower survivors to lead the recovery of their own communities. You are the architect of a safer environment for the next generation.

Benefits & Salary

  • Type: Full-Time, On-site (Borno / Yobe)
  • Salary: Competitive (Commensurate with the candidate’s level of experience and the NGO’s national pay scale).
  • Professional Growth: Opportunity to work with an indigenous NGO at the forefront of the Northeast response, with significant investment in staff capacity building.

Tips for Applicants

  1. Demonstrate Empathy: In your application, focus on your understanding of the “Survivor-Centered Approach”—this is the most important mindset for this role.
  2. Highlight Contextual Knowledge: If you have worked specifically with women or children associated with armed groups, emphasize this experience as it is a highly specialized part of the role.
  3. Prepare for a Technical Interview: Be ready to discuss the specific tools you have used for data management and how you ensure confidentiality in field settings.
