Horticulturist at African Natural Resources & Mines Limited(ANRML)

In the essential intersection of industrial growth and environmental stewardship, the role of a Horticulturist is vital for maintaining the ecological balance of our local communities. Large-scale mining operations have a profound impact on the land, and it is through scientific greening and biological reclamation that we restore biodiversity and fulfill our promise of environmental responsibility. By joining this mission in Kaduna, you will be at the forefront of transforming industrial sites into thriving greenbelts, ensuring that our development leaves a positive, lasting legacy on the earth.

Job Summary

The Horticulturist is a key technical role dedicated to the planning, execution, and long-term maintenance of all botanical and land-reclamation initiatives at our Kaduna mining project. You will lead the development of protective greenbelts and manage the biological “re-birthing” of mined-out areas to ensure we meet stringent statutory environmental standards. Your expertise will bridge the gap between heavy industry and nature, ensuring our operations thrive in harmony with the local environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ecological Restoration: Lead the biological reclamation and rehabilitation efforts for dump areas and exhausted mining sites to restore soil health and vegetation.
  • Greenbelt Development: Design and implement expansive plantation projects within and surrounding the mining perimeter to act as natural environmental buffers.
  • Nursery & Sapling Management: Oversee specialized nursery operations, ensuring the healthy cultivation, propagation, and preparation of various plant species for field relocation.
  • Plant Health & Maintenance: Manage all technical aspects of plant care, including advanced irrigation strategies, fertilization schedules, pruning, and integrated pest management (IPM).
  • Monitoring & Evaluation: Conduct rigorous growth tracking and survival audits to assess the effectiveness of plantation strategies and adjust methods accordingly.
  • Administrative & Regulatory Compliance: Maintain detailed records of all botanical activities to support environmental audits and ensure the project remains in full compliance with state and federal statutory inspections.
  • Team Leadership: Supervise and mentor a team of gardeners, helpers, and contract laborers, ensuring high standards of workmanship and safety.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education

  • Essential: A Degree or Diploma in Horticulture, Agriculture, Forestry, or Botany from an accredited institution.

Professional Experience

  • Technical Background: Between 2 to 5 years of hands-on experience in large-scale plantation or landscaping projects.
  • Preferred Context: Experience working within mining sites or heavy industrial projects is a significant advantage, particularly regarding land reclamation.

Core Skills

  • Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of soil science, tropical plant species, and reclamation techniques.
  • Operational Leadership: Proven ability to manage diverse labor teams and contractor workflows.
  • Detail-Oriented: Strong record-keeping and reporting skills suitable for environmental auditing processes.

Why This Role is Important

Mining is a temporary use of land, but environmental impact is permanent without the intervention of a skilled Horticulturist. Your work directly offsets the carbon footprint of industrial activity and prevents soil erosion, protecting the water table and local air quality. You are the guardian of the project’s “social license to operate,” ensuring that the community sees a commitment to a green and healthy future.

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary: Competitive (Based on industry standards and the candidate’s specific level of experience).
  • Benefits: Opportunity to work with a leading industrial group, involvement in large-scale environmental engineering, and a platform for professional growth in the field of industrial agriculture.

Tips for Applicants

  1. Showcase Reclamation Experience: If you have ever successfully “greened” a difficult or degraded landscape, highlight this in your CV—reclamation is the hardest part of this job.
  2. Focus on Sustainability: Demonstrate your knowledge of local Kaduna flora; using native species for greenbelts is often preferred for survival rates.
  3. Subject Line Accuracy: Ensure your email subject line is exactly “Horticulturist” to pass through the initial screening filters.
