Job Opportunity: WASH Sector NGO Co-Coordinator (North-East Nigeria) at GPON

In the conflict-affected BAY states of North-East Nigeria, access to clean water and dignified sanitation is not just a service—it is a lifeline. This pivotal role serves as the bridge between international standards and local realities, ensuring that humanitarian efforts are synchronized to save lives and prevent disease outbreaks. By joining this mission, you become a central architect in a coordinated response that protects the health and dignity of thousands of vulnerable families.

Job Summary

The WASH Sector NGO Co-Coordinator is responsible for fostering a unified and inclusive environment where local and international NGOs collaborate effectively with UN agencies and government bodies. Your primary goal is to harmonize the efforts of various partners, ensuring that resources are directed where they are most needed while maintaining the highest technical standards. You will play a critical role in strategic planning, gap analysis, and ensuring that the voice of the NGO community is heard at the highest levels of humanitarian decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Coordination & Collaboration

  • Joint Leadership: Partner with UNICEF to co-lead WASH Sector meetings, ensuring discussions are action-oriented and results are documented and followed up.
  • Inclusive Engagement: Actively reach out to national and local NGOs to ensure their perspectives are integrated into the broader humanitarian response.
  • Geographic Synergy: Link state-level activities with Local Government Area (LGA) platforms to eliminate service gaps and prevent the duplication of efforts.
  • Conflict Resolution: Mediate between stakeholders to solve operational challenges and improve collective technical coverage.

Evidence-Based Information Management

  • Operational Mapping: Oversee the collection of partner data to create a clear picture of who is doing what, where, and what challenges remain.
  • Quality Control: Ensure that reporting from the field is accurate and timely, providing a reliable foundation for strategic shifts.
  • Risk Analysis: Support the assessment of emerging threats, translating complex data into actionable recommendations for sector partners.

Emergency Preparedness & Technical Growth

  • Strategy Alignment: Guide partners in adapting their programs to meet the overarching Sector humanitarian response plan.
  • Crisis Readiness: Lead the development of contingency plans for seasonal or sudden-onset emergencies, such as cholera outbreaks or displacement due to flooding.
  • Mentorship: Design and facilitate workshops and training sessions to elevate the technical and operational capacity of local partners.

Advocacy & Representation

  • NGO Advocacy: Serve as the primary representative for NGO interests within inter-sector forums, ensuring frontline realities inform policy.
  • Principled Action: Champion the core humanitarian principles of neutrality and independence in all coordination activities.
  • Impactful Messaging: Synthesize field data into compelling advocacy briefs to secure necessary support and visibility for the WASH response.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Educational Background: An advanced degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Civil or Water Engineering, Public Health, International Development, or a related technical field.
  • Humanitarian Experience: At least 3 years of hands-on experience managing WASH programs in complex emergency or post-conflict environments.
  • Leadership Experience: A minimum of 2 years in a dedicated coordination role, such as cluster lead, consortium manager, or multi-stakeholder platform focal point.
  • Technical Knowledge: Deep familiarity with SPHERE standards, the humanitarian program cycle, and accountability to affected populations.
  • Soft Skills: Exceptional negotiation and diplomatic skills, with the ability to build consensus among diverse groups with varying mandates.
  • Digital Proficiency: Advanced skill in data management tools (Excel, KoboToolbox, or similar) and remote collaboration platforms.
  • Language: Professional fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory.

Why This Role Matters

The BAY states (Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe) continue to face one of the world’s most complex humanitarian crises. Without effective coordination, aid becomes fragmented, and the most remote communities are often left behind. This role is essential because it ensures that the “whole of sector” response is greater than the sum of its parts, turning individual NGO efforts into a powerful, synchronized movement for public health.

Benefits of Applying

  • Impactful Leadership: A chance to shape the humanitarian strategy for an entire region.
  • Professional Growth: High-level exposure to UN systems and international donor frameworks.
  • Collaborative Environment: Work within a dedicated team committed to making a tangible difference in the lives of vulnerable women and children.
  • Competitive Compensation: GPON offers a salary package that is competitive within the Nigerian NGO sector, commensurate with experience and the seniority of the role.
