ITP Nutrition Assistant at Taimaka Project

In the fight against severe acute malnutrition, every meal serves as a critical step toward recovery and survival. In Gombe State, dedicated nutrition professionals are the backbone of lifesaving interventions that transform the lives of vulnerable children. Joining this mission means becoming a vital link in a chain of care designed to restore health and hope to families in need.

Job Summary

The ITP Nutrition Assistant is a hands-on clinical support role focused on the precise delivery of therapeutic feeding protocols within an Inpatient Therapeutic Program (ITP). You will be responsible for the hygienic preparation of lifesaving milks, monitoring patient intake, and empowering caregivers with the knowledge to support their child’s journey back to health.

Key Responsibilities

  • Therapeutic Feeding Management: Prepare and distribute specialized feeds (F-75, F-100) exactly as prescribed, ensuring all hygiene protocols are met and no unauthorized food enters the treatment area.
  • Patient Monitoring & Documentation: Conduct daily morning weight checks, maintain precise feeding charts, and accurately record all nutritional intake and NGT (Nasogastric Tube) gravity feeds.
  • Caregiver Support & Education: Guide families on feeding schedules, promote continuous breastfeeding alongside therapeutic care, and instruct on the proper use of facility resources like mosquito nets and hygiene stations.
  • Clinical Safety: Immediately identify and report red-flag symptoms such as fever, vomiting, or diarrhea to the nursing team to ensure rapid medical intervention.
  • Facility Hygiene: Oversee the cleanliness of the patient environment, ensuring waste disposal protocols are followed and feeding utensils are sterilized before and after every use.
  • Team Collaboration: Provide detailed updates during daily shift handovers, sharing critical observations regarding patient appetite and behavior.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education: Minimum of a National Diploma (ND) in Community Health (CHEW) or a related nutritional field.
  • Technical Skill: Proven ability to perform basic clinical calculations and accurately measure therapeutic food quantities.
  • Language Proficiency: Fluency in Hausa and English is mandatory. Candidates who can also communicate in Fulfulde will be given strong preference.
  • Soft Skills: Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate technical health information respectfully to caregivers from diverse backgrounds.
  • Physical Commitment: Ability to manage early morning clinical tasks (such as 6:00 AM weighing) and maintain high energy in a fast-paced environment.
