Africa Youth Growth Foundation (AYGF), a regional non-governmental organization driving impact across thematic areas including Climate Change, Environment, and Livelihoods, is recruiting a highly motivated Environment and Climate Change Officer for the SPRING Project.

This role is vital for supporting community-led resilience, ecosystem restoration, and ensuring all project interventions are climate-smart and sustainable.

Position Summary

The Environment & Climate Change Officer will be responsible for supporting the implementation of environmentally sustainable and climate-resilient activities under the SPRING Project. You will focus on ecosystem restoration, climate adaptation, natural resource governance, and strengthening community-led resilience systems, ensuring all work aligns with AYGF’s sustainability framework and national climate policies.

Key Responsibilities

1. Program Implementation & Safeguards

  • Support the planning and execution of climate-smart activities (e.g., afforestation, land restoration, soil conservation, and water-harvesting systems).
  • Ensure strict compliance with environmental safeguards, climate risk screening, and sustainability principles across all project activities.
  • Conduct environmental and climate vulnerability assessments to inform community planning and adaptation actions.

2. Capacity Building & Engagement

  • Facilitate trainings for youth, women, farmers, and local institutions on climate adaptation, ecosystem restoration, and natural resource management.
  • Develop user-friendly training manuals and community toolkits on restoration and green livelihoods.
  • Support community-led resource management committees, ensuring inclusive participation from women and youth.

3. Monitoring, Reporting, and Resource Mobilization

  • Track progress on environmental and climate indicators using the AYGF’s Project Tracking, Monitoring, and Accountability System (PTMAS).
  • Produce high-quality reports, case studies, and technical briefs for internal and donor reporting.
  • Contribute significantly to resource mobilization efforts by preparing high-quality concept notes, technical briefs, and climate/environment-related proposals for donor funding, ensuring they are evidence-based and gender-responsive.

Qualifications and Experience

Required

  • Education: University degree (BSc or equivalent) in Environmental Science, Climate Change, Natural Resource Management, Forestry, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in implementing environmental management, climate resilience, or ecosystem restoration programs.
  • Technical Expertise: Demonstrated expertise in climate-smart agriculture, environmental assessment, and ecosystem restoration.
  • Context: Proven experience working in rural or semi-arid contexts, preferably in Northern Nigeria.

Desired

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a related field.
  • Knowledge of Hausa language and familiarity with the Katsina State context.
  • Experience in integrating Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) into livelihood programs.

Core Competencies

  • Strong project management, analytical, and reporting skills.
  • Excellent facilitation and training ability with diverse audiences.
  • Ability to develop donor-ready proposals and concept notes.
