POSITION OVERVIEW

International Medical Corps (IMC) is seeking a skilled and compassionate Midwife to join our maternal health team in Damboa. This role is dedicated to providing high-quality obstetrical care to pregnant women and their newborns through the entire continuum of care—antenatal, delivery, and postnatal. Working under the supervision of a specialist doctor and following IMC’s global MNH protocols, you will be responsible for conducting normal deliveries independently and managing obstetric emergencies to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality in this high-need environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Clinical Obstetrical Care

  • Maternal Health: Implement and ensure the continuity of Antenatal Care (ANC) and Postnatal Care (PNC), focusing on healthy timing and spacing of pregnancies.
  • Delivery: Conduct normal deliveries independently and manage obstetric emergencies (BEmONC) according to national and international protocols.
  • Newborn Care: Ensure universal hygienic standards for newborn care and support the integration of nutritional care for at-risk infants and their mothers.
  • Referral Management: Assess the feasibility of referrals from Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) to the OPD/MCH clinics and ensure proper documentation of all referral cases.

2. Specialized Support & Protection

  • GBV Support: Collaborate with medical doctors and nurses in providing clinical care and support for survivors of violence against women and girls.
  • Infant Feeding: Support mothers in proper positioning, attachment, and effective suckling, including specialized support for nutritionally at-risk units.
  • Confidentiality: Guarantee absolute privacy and confidentiality for all patients.

3. Facility & Resource Management

  • Hygiene & Equipment: Ensure strict sterilization and hygiene criteria; perform minor maintenance on biomedical equipment and alert supervisors of malfunctions.
  • Supply Chain: Manage the ongoing supply of drugs and equipment required for maternity activities, including consumption monitoring and ordering.
  • Data Management: Ensure daily data quality for ANC, admissions, deliveries, and discharges; provide timely and accurate reports.

CANDIDATE SPECIFICATIONS

Education & Licensing

  • Qualification: General Nursing and Midwifery Certificate from a recognized institution.
  • Licensing: Must possess a valid and current license from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

Experience & Skills

  • Relevant Background: Minimum of two (2) years of professional clinical experience as a Midwife, specifically in low-resource or humanitarian settings.
  • Language: Professional fluency in English and mandatory proficiency in the local languages spoken in Damboa (e.g., Hausa, Kanuri).
  • Technical: Essential computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, and Internet).

METHOD OF APPLICATION

Interested and qualified candidates should apply through the IMC online recruitment portal.

Success Blueprint: Midwife (IMC Damboa)

The Midwife role at IMC in Damboa is a frontline position that requires clinical autonomy and deep sensitivity to the local context. To succeed, your application should reflect your ability to handle complex deliveries while maintaining the highest standards of hygiene and protection.

1. Highlight “BEmONC” and “Normal Deliveries”

The job description explicitly mentions conducting “normal deliveries independently” and managing “obstetric emergencies.”

  • The Strategy: Your CV should quantify your experience. Instead of saying “experienced in delivery,” say “Conducted [X] successful normal deliveries independently and managed emergency obstetric cases including [hemorrhage/eclampsia] in a low-resource setting.”
  • Keywords: “BEmONC,” “CEmONC,” “Partograph usage,” “Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH) management.”

2. Integration of Nutrition and Mental Health

This role has a unique focus on treating the “mother and infant as one unit,” especially for nutritionally at-risk infants.

  • Pro-Tip: Highlight your experience in IYCF (Infant and Young Child Feeding). Mention your ability to support mothers with positioning, attachment, and the emotional/mental health support required for breastfeeding success in stressful environments.

3. Protection and GBV Care

In Borno, the intersection of maternal health and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is critical.

  • Success Factor: Mention any specific training or experience you have in Clinical Management of Rape (CMR) or working with survivors of violence. Show that you understand the protocols for compassionate, confidential, and multi-disciplinary care.

4. Data and Supply Management

Midwives at IMC are responsible for their own data and drug consumption tracking.

  • Action: Highlight your “Data Quality” skills. Mention your experience with ANC/PNC registers and how you use consumption reports to prevent stockouts of life-saving maternal health drugs like Oxytocin or Magnesium Sulfate.

5. Cultural and Language Proficiency

Damboa requires a midwife who can communicate directly with the women in the community.

  • Requirement: Proficiency in local languages is mandatory. Clearly state your fluency in Hausa, Kanuri, or other local dialects on your CV. Discuss your experience working with Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) to facilitate safe referrals.

6. Final Application Checklist

  • [ ] License Status: Is your license from the Nursing and Midwifery Council current? List the expiration date or status clearly.
  • [ ] Low-Resource Experience: Does your CV reflect work in rural clinics, IDP camps, or emergency settings?
  • [ ] Technical Skills: Ensure you mention your proficiency in Excel, as you will be responsible for data reporting.
  • [ ] Rolling Basis: As with most IMC roles in Borno, hiring happens quickly. Apply today.

You are the guardian of new life in Damboa. Apply with clinical excellence.
