ABOUT MSF

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an independent, non-profit international humanitarian organization dedicated to providing life-saving medical assistance to populations in distress. We deliver aid without discrimination and regardless of race, religion, creed, or political affiliation.

MSF has been active in Katsina since February 2021, established following an exploratory mission to address critical health needs. Currently, MSF operates:

  • Two Inpatient Therapeutic Feeding Centres (ITFCs): Located at Kofar Sauri PHCC and Turai Yar’adua PHCC.
  • Four Ambulatory Therapeutic Feeding Centres (ATFCs): Located in Jibia LGA (Magama and Daddara), Mashi, and Katsina City (Kofar Marusa and Mashi).

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

To provide professional counseling and educational sessions to patients in strict compliance with MSF medical and mental health protocols, aiming to directly improve patients’ psychosocial and emotional well-being.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Patient Assessment & Care: Conduct comprehensive psychosocial, socio-economic, and administrative assessments for patients, including new admissions and those in the Salama Clinic.
  • Counseling & Psycho-education: Deliver individual or group counseling and psycho-educational sessions to patients and their families. Conduct targeted counseling and psychostimulation activities in the ICU, step-down units, and other supported units.
  • Specialized Support: Provide compassionate, protocol-aligned support to SGBV (Sexual and Gender-Based Violence) survivors in close collaboration with medical departments. Support families navigating difficult end-of-life decisions for their children.
  • Referrals & Collaboration: Refer patients to external specialists or partner institutions for further specialized support when necessary.
  • Materials & Data Management: Contribute to the development, adaptation, and management of counseling and educational tools. Maintain strict patient confidentiality while keeping accurate clinical files, activity statistics, and data records.
  • Team Participation & Reporting: Actively participate in clinical supervisions, team meetings, training sessions, and community sensitization activities. Regularly debrief with the Mental Health Activity Manager (MHAM) or Mental Health Referent, and promptly escalate field issues to supervisors.
  • Hygiene & Compliance: Ensure strict adherence to MSF protocols, safety guidelines, and infection control/hygiene practices.

REQUIREMENTS

Education

  • Essential: Degree or Diploma in Counseling, Social Work, or Psychology.
  • Desirable: Any additional related degree or specialized professional training.

Experience

  • Essential: Minimum of one (1) year of professional experience in a similar or relevant counseling/social work role.
  • Desirable: Previous experience working with MSF or other non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Languages

  • Essential: Full professional fluency in both Hausa and English (written and spoken).

CONTRACT & REMUNERATION

HR ACTION REQUIRED: Please clarify the contract structure before publishing. A “Daily Worker” setup usually implies on-call, casual work without fixed monthly hours, whereas a “Fixed-Term Contract” implies guaranteed monthly hours and standard benefits.

  • Option A (Fixed-Term): Fixed-Term Contract | 208 working hours per month.
  • Option B (Daily Worker): Daily Worker Pool | On-call / Hourly basis.
  • Remuneration: In accordance with the MSF salary scale, plus a 13th-month allowance equivalent to one month’s gross salary.
