Role Overview
- Under the direct supervision of the Bilingual/Trilingual Precis Writers Officer, the Bilingual Editorial Assistant role plays a pivotal role in supporting precis writers throughout all stages of the publication process.
- The incumbent will conduct thorough research to gather relevant information on specific subject matters and apply this in the preparation of written content across all the recognised languages of the Commission.
- The incumbent will be in liaison with the Institution’s Revisors to ensure the adoption of the Commission’s jargon in all publications.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Provide valuable assistance in research, writing, editing, and proofreading reports and notes to ensure the creation of high-quality and impactful publications.
- Conduct thorough research and gain knowledge about different thematic areas to effectively collaborate and support document owners to develop and refine their ideas and document content.
- Conduct thorough proofreading of manuscripts to ensure accuracy, coherence, and adherence to style guidelines.
- Serve as l assistant to the editors and precis writers, providing comprehensive support throughout the publication process.
- Ensure a consistent identifiable style, correct grammar and punctuation in manuscripts, maintaining clarity and coherence of written content.
- Where necessary, check correct cross-referencing such as citations, quotations and bibliography.
- Ensure that written content complies with established writing protocols and adheres to established Commission writing guidelines.
- Identify and correct formatting errors in manuscripts, ensuring consistency and professional presentation of written materials.
- Assist and help in various additional tasks as needed to support the editors and precis writers in their roles.
- Perform any other duties as may be required from time to time.
Academic Qualifications and Experience
- Brevet de Technicien (BT) / ND or equivalent certificate equivalent. Technical or vocational certificate in Languages, Translation and Writing/Editing or related field.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in research, writing, editing, and proofreading or related field.
- Knowledge of targeted languages, and ability to perform simple translation assignments from either French or Portuguese to English and vice versa”
- Understanding of grammatical, lexical, and idiomatic structures as well as the graphic and typographic conventions of targeted languages.
- Ability to draft, rephrase, restructure, condense, and post-edit rapidly and accurately and uses references such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, and others as required to ensure accuracy of translation.”
- Experience working for an international organisation is an added advantage.
- Familiarity with AI post-editing tools and use of Chat GTP.
- Ability to generate accurate AI Prompts.
- Advanced User of MS Office Suite.
- Knowledge of the application of Graphic Design tools to document preparation and editing.
- Familiarity with content formatting for social media platforms.
- Strong electronic and research skills.
- Strong editing and proofreading skills in A language and at a high level in B language.
- Good time management skills.
- Excellent note-taking and summarisation skills.

- Fluency in oral and written expressions in one of the ECOWAS official languages of the Community (English, French & Portuguese). Knowledge of an additional one will be an added advantage.

- Good organizational skills with an excellent ability to break down work into smaller parts and focus on the most important steps first.
- Ability to contribute to maintaining organizational performance standards throughout the implementation of new processes, practices and plans adopted by the Department and of relevance to assigned tasks.
