Opportunity – Research Laboratory Scientist at Alliance for International Medical Action (ALIMA)
The Alliance for International Medical Action (ALIMA) is an independent humanitarian medical NGO that was created in 2009 by professionals of humanitarian medicine. ALIMA’s mission is to provide medical care in emergency situations or medical catastrophes.
We are recruiting to fill the position below:
Job Title: Research Laboratory Scientist
Location: Owo, Ondo
Job type: Contract
Level: 05
Length of Contract: 12 months
Line Manager: Medical Referent/Research Manager
Task and Responsibilities
- Conduct a set of laboratory tests on patient samples, ensuring accuracy, precision, and strict adherence to study protocols.
- These tests will include, but are not limited to, nucleic acid extraction, polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), blood biochemistry, and haematology.
- Reception of study-specific biological samples according to study guidelines.
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues in the analysis of RT-PCR test results to achieve research goals and objectives.
- Production of sample aliquots and their temporary storage on site in the biobank according to study specifications
- Adhere to quality control procedures to ensure the reliability and reproducibility of experimental results.
- Perform the scheduled maintenance and calibration of study-specific laboratory equipment according to the manufacturer’s specifications as well as timely documentation.
- Timely documentation of test results performed in compliance with GCP guidelines.
- Uploading of test results to the appropriate platform for prompt decision-making by the research team.
- Routinely monitor and record the temperature of the laboratory space, fridges, and freezers, documenting any alarms triggered by the temperature monitoring system promptly.
- Adhere to safety protocols to minimize the risk while handling infectious materials and biohazardous substances.
- Prepare samples for pickups and shipments, ensuring proper packaging and compliance with transportation regulations.
- Undertake additional duties as assigned to meet the specific needs of the clinical trial and research team.
Requirements and Skills
- Candidates should possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science.
- Proven research experience in a laboratory setting.
- Strong understanding of scientific principles and laboratory techniques
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Familiarity with laboratory software and instrumentation
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Registered with the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria.
- Strong knowledge of PCR and PCR-related techniques and blood processing is necessary.
- Working experiences in Ebola or Lassa Fever outbreaks or other viral hemorrhagic fevers will be appreciated.
- Desirable working experience with International medical NGO’s in developing countries.
- literacy (MS Excel, Word, Outlook, and Internet)
- Well organized with good negotiation and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary team, in an emergency and under pressure, to manage stress easily and be result-oriented.
- Ability to work in close collaboration with MOH staff
