The French Section of Médecins Sans Frontières is recruiting for its project in Katsina:

CONTEXT

Médecins Sans Frontières is a private, not-for-profit international humanitarian organization dedicated to providing medical assistance to populations in distress, without discrimination and regardless of race, religion, creed or political affiliation.
MSF has been active in Katsina since February 2021 after carrying an exploratory mission that end up with an opening of the project.
Currently, MSF is running an ITFC (Inpatient Therapeutic Feeding Centre) in Katsina in the Kofar Sauri PHCC and 4 ATFC (Ambulatory Therapeutic Feeding Centre) including three in Jibia LGA (Magama, Daddara, Riko,) and one in Katsina City (Kofar Marusa).

MAIN PURPOSE

Providing nursing care, treatment and follow-up of patients, according to doctors’ prescriptions, protocols applied in service and universal hygiene standards/precautions, to ensure the quality and continuity of care for the targeted population

JOB DESCRIPTION

• Knowing, promoting, implementing and following up the universal hygiene standards/ precautions, bio-hazard prevention and infection control, security rules and other protocols and procedures in the medical premises and ensuring high standards of hygiene of his/her working environment. Respecting medical secrets and confidentiality at all times.
• Organizing and carrying out care and treatments according to medical prescriptions, and assisting during consultations, daily rounds and other medical procedures. Participating in health education of the patient (and family) when necessary.
• Identifying Sexually Gender Based Violence victims and referring them to the medical team so they can receive the necessary treatment. Knowing and is aware of the importance and appropriate use of the Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) Kit
• Ensuring patients are properly received and installed and that those with lack of autonomy are assisted, especially regarding their feeding, personal hygiene, movements and comfort. For ER and OPD nurse, ensuring triage of patients in waiting areas, wards or during emergencies, detecting the priority acute/emergency cases, carrying out first aid care and referring them to the doctor when necessary
• Sending material to be sterilized and recuperates it from sterilization
• Carrying out admission, surveillance and follow-up of patients (i.e. assessment of the evolution of their state of health and the identification of any emergency or deterioration
• Carrying and supervising administrative procedures and documents (fill in patient’s files, forms, consumptions, statistics, registers, health files, etc.), ensuring an appropriate written/oral handover, and reporting any problematic situations and cases that may arise. Participating in data collection and keeping doctors/supervisors informed.
• Participating in the department-related pharmacy and medical equipment control and maintenance (quality and its functioning, storage conditions, follow-up of expired drugs inventories, stock takes of medicines and material at every team changeover ensuring no material is taken out of nursing area/wards without prior authorisation, etc.)
• Perform cleaning and minor maintenance for biomedical equipment used. Following the user manual and protocols and alert supervisor in case of malfunctioning.
• Supervising and training nurse-aids, nutritional assistants, cleaners and other related staff under his/her supervision, ensuring teamwork and adherence to all appropriate protocols and procedures
Triage:
• Checks general status of patients, giving priority for consultation to those that present signs of severity: lethargy-unconsciousness, convulsions, fever, dehydration, respiratory distress, and malnutrition according to their criteria: Red, Yellow and Green for ATFC
• Ensure to do a good triage in the screening area and children are sorted and universal precautionary measures observed.
• Ensure that every child in waiting area receive water sugar 50ml
• Prioritize severe cases and inform the doctor of the severe case for the admission of the child.
• The child is properly received and must have good communication with the caregiver.
• Have the technique and skills for good management (systematic para-check, Hb, glycemia, blood grouping, oxygen, place the venous tract, SNG, bladder catheter, vaccination, etc.)

Consultation/ER
• Carry out a clinical examination of all patients on admission and follow medical prescriptions
• Take vital signs (temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate) and complete the patient form correctly.
• Know how to define the Weight / Height percentage to help you Identify the degree and type of child malnutrition (marasmus, kwashiorkor).
• Make sure that the patient is properly examined and that the child is received by the nurse or the Ass-Nut in the hospital room trough proper handing over.
• Observe universal precautionary measures.
• Ensure that all standard materials are available and inform their supervisor in case of lack of any necessary materials and ensure their conservation.
• Know how to do cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques
• Know the signs of seriousness of each pathology and always call the doctor in time.
• Perform first aid, administration of the first IV dose and emergency treatment before bringing the child to the hospital ward.
• Have the technique and skills for good management (systematic para-check, Hb, glycemia, blood grouping, oxygen, place the venous tract, SNG, bladder catheter, vaccination, etc.)
Hospitalization
• Ensure the good reception and welcome of the patient.
• Take children’s vital signs according to medical prescription and follow instruction for the medical Prescriptions.
• Check the edemas and note them on the file
• Make sure that the treatment is taken and recorded in the medical file.
• Observe universal precautionary measures.
• Ensure closer surveillance in more serious cases.
• Be able to detect any complications in the child and refer him to the doctor
• Attend the daily medical examination.
• Note changes in treatment.
• The protocol for transfusions is strictly observed.
• Monitor the infusions well (extravasation, drops / minutes, duration of the infusion).
• Ensure a change of SNG, bladder catheter and seal According to each indication in the MSF protocol
• Accompany the doctor during the tour of the unit and follow orders of medication correctly
• Make a good oral and written test of each patient.
• Ensure good management of drugs and equipment.
• Ensure that all standard materials are available and in good condition.
• Ensure good communication and give information on the progress of the child to the accompanying person.

Others:
• Works in close collaboration and supervises Nuts ass/ Nurse aids in all activities related to patient care
• Collaborate with other medical and paramedical
• Ensure continuity of care through proper handing and taking over of patients, drugs, biomed equipment, data and patients records
• Ensure proper organization of ward, and participate in patients ward rounds
• Ensure proper and timely administration of drugs according to prescriptions and protocols, ensure pharmacy stock management, inventories, proper consumption and drug storage
• Participation in departmental meetings, routine trainings, mortality and morbidity reviews
• Supporting and supervising Nut ass during routine feeding of patients
• Take lead of the team/ Unit for the quality of care
• Respect the patient’s rights, ensure their consent
• Respect the dignity and privacy of the patient and his family
• Performing other responsibility assigned by the supervisor in respect to patient quality care

REQUIREMENTS

Education Essential recognized nurse degree/diploma with nutrition experience. Desirable bachelor’s in science of nursing; post basic qualification is an added advantage
Experience Desirable 2 years of previous experience and previous experience in other NGO’s. Demonstrable experience in supervising and training others in a team setting

Languages Hausa and English languages essential. Mission language is desirable

REMUNERATION
According to MSF salary scale plus 13th month allowance equivalent to 1 month of gross salary
