Mini-Lab Technician (Microbiology Focus) at Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) Belgium

In regions facing the dual challenges of conflict and limited healthcare infrastructure, accurate diagnostics are the cornerstone of life-saving medical interventions. As a Mini-Lab Technician, you will be at the front lines of the battle against antimicrobial resistance, providing clinicians with the critical data needed to treat infectious diseases effectively. Your precision in the laboratory directly translates to better patient outcomes and more resilient community health in Borno State.

Job Summary

The Mini-Lab Technician is responsible for conducting high-quality clinical laboratory investigations with a specialized focus on microbiology and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. By adhering to rigorous biosafety protocols and precise diagnostic standards, you will ensure that doctors receive reliable results to guide patient care. You will play a vital role in maintaining the integrity of our diagnostic pipeline and contributing to the overall success of our medical missions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Precision Diagnostics: Execute the full spectrum of sample processing, from initial intake and registration to the identification of microorganisms and specialized sensitivity testing.
  • Data Integrity & Management: Utilize the Mini-LIMS digital system to meticulously log data at every stage of the testing process, ensuring a transparent and traceable diagnostic trail.
  • Quality Assurance: Conduct regular quality control checks, identify non-conformities in equipment or results, and implement corrective actions to maintain laboratory excellence.
  • Bio-Safety Leadership: Strictly enforce infection control and waste management protocols to ensure the safety of the laboratory team and the surrounding medical facility.
  • Operational Maintenance: Oversee the daily upkeep of workstations, monitor reagent and supply inventories, and manage the referral of bacterial strains to reference laboratories when necessary.
  • Collaborative Communication: Report technical issues or diagnostic anomalies to supervisors and participate in multidisciplinary meetings to align laboratory results with clinical needs.

Essential Skills & Qualifications

  • Educational Background: A specialized Diploma or Post-graduate Diploma in Laboratory Technology is mandatory.
  • Technical Experience: Minimum of one year of professional experience as a laboratory technician. Direct experience in a microbiology setting is highly desirable.
  • Language Proficiency: Full professional fluency in English is required; knowledge of local languages spoken in Borno State is a significant advantage.
  • Digital Literacy: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel) and experience with cloud-based collaboration tools (SharePoint/OneDrive).
  • Core Competencies: A results-oriented mindset, the ability to work effectively within a diverse team, and the emotional resilience to thrive in high-pressure humanitarian environments.

Why This Role is Important

In many humanitarian contexts, “blind” prescribing of antibiotics leads to treatment failure and the rise of resistant “superbugs.” This role bridges the gap between uncertainty and evidence-based medicine. By identifying the specific bacteria causing an illness, you empower doctors to prescribe the right medicine at the right time, saving lives that might otherwise be lost to treatable infections.

Benefits of Joining Our Team

  • Professional Growth: Gain experience with cutting-edge “Mini-Lab” technology designed specifically for resource-limited settings.
  • Purpose-Driven Work: Join a globally recognized leader in humanitarian medical aid.
  • Supportive Environment: Work alongside dedicated international and local experts in a culture that values diversity and equal opportunity.
  • Compensation: We offer a competitive salary package within the NGO sector, designed to reflect the technical expertise and dedication required for this role.
