The Critical Impact of This Role
In the journey toward an accurate medical diagnosis, the integrity of a patient’s sample is the most vital first step. As a Laboratory Specimen Officer, you serve as the guardian of diagnostic accuracy, ensuring that every specimen is handled with the precision and care it deserves. By maintaining rigorous standards from the moment a sample arrives, you directly contribute to life-saving clinical decisions and the overall wellbeing of the community.
Job Summary
The Laboratory Specimen Officer is responsible for the seamless intake, verification, and preparation of clinical samples for diagnostic testing. Your mission is to eliminate errors during the pre-analytical phase and ensure that laboratory scientists receive high-quality, properly documented specimens ready for immediate analysis.
Core Responsibilities
Specimen Intake & Data Integrity
- Strict Verification: Thoroughly cross-reference patient identification with specimen labeling and clinical documentation to prevent diagnostic mix-ups.
- Digital Logging: Expertly register and track all incoming samples within the Laboratory Information System (LIS) to maintain a transparent chain of custody.
- Documentation Review: Critically evaluate accompanying paperwork for completeness and clinical accuracy before samples proceed to the bench.
Processing & Sample Management
- Technical Preparation: Execute specialized specimen processing techniques—such as centrifugation or aliquoting—following strict laboratory protocols.
- Integrity Maintenance: Manage precise storage conditions (temperature control and stabilization) to preserve the biological viability of every sample.
- Logistics & Tracking: Supervise the orderly movement of specimens throughout the laboratory departments to ensure rapid turnaround times.
Quality Control & Safety
- Environmental Standards: Maintain a sterile and highly organized workspace in accordance with international biosafety regulations.
- Collaborative Support: Act as a key liaison between phlebotomists, nursing staff, and laboratory scientists to resolve any pre-analytical issues.
- Compliance: Adhere to all health and safety guidelines to protect yourself, your colleagues, and the environment from biohazardous risks.
Candidate Requirements
- Academic Foundation: A minimum of a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology or a closely related field.
- Professional Experience: While entry-level candidates are welcome, prior experience in a clinical laboratory or specific training in specimen accessioning is highly valued.
- Technical Proficiency: Comfort using digital Laboratory Information Systems and general office software.
- Attention to Detail: An unwavering commitment to accuracy, with the ability to spot minor discrepancies in patient data.
- Logistical Fit: Candidates residing within or very close to Ikeja are strongly preferred to ensure consistent attendance and rapid response.
