Two Critical Roles in Community Health: Nutrition Officer (Abakaliki, Ebonyi)

At the WOCHAD Initiative (Women, Children, Aged, and Disabled Initiative), we believe that robust community development starts with strong health foundations. For nearly two decades, WOCHAD has been dedicated to improving the lives of rural, marginalized, and disadvantaged populations across Benue and Ebonyi States. We are a non-for-profit community-based organization focused on implementing diverse, development-oriented programs—from WASH and sustainable agriculture to maternal health, education, and human rights advocacy.

We are currently expanding our critical Primary Health Care programs and are searching for two passionate and skilled professionals to join our team in Ebonyi State.

The Opportunity: Nutrition Officer (2 Openings)

Job Title: Nutrition Officer

Location: Abakaliki, Ebonyi State Employment Type: Contract Slot: 2

As a Nutrition Officer, you will be on the front lines, leading efforts to combat malnutrition and promote healthy eating practices within the communities we serve. This role is central to improving maternal and child health outcomes, empowering families, and strengthening local health systems.

Key Responsibilities

You will be responsible for driving impactful change through direct community engagement and capacity building, including:

  • Community Sensitization: Conducting essential community education on Maternal, Infant, and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN) and Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) best practices.
  • Direct Health Screening: Leading growth monitoring activities, MUAC screening, malnutrition referrals, and providing diligent follow-up for children and mothers at risk.
  • Capacity Building: Strengthening the skills of local health workers, including CHIPS agents, CHEWs, community volunteers, and facility staff, to ensure sustainable nutrition service delivery.
  • Service Quality: Conducting facility visits to reinforce and improve the quality of nutrition services offered at the primary care level.
  • Data and Reporting: Maintaining thorough documentation of household visits, counselling sessions, referrals, and service uptake, and supporting routine community data reporting and surveillance.

Requirements: Who We Are Looking For

We seek candidates who are deeply committed to our mission and possess the practical skills necessary to thrive in a demanding, community-focused environment.

  • Education: A degree or certificate in Nutrition, Dietetics, Nursing, Food Science, Public Health, or a related field is required.
  • Experience: 1–2 years’ experience in community nutrition or Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MNCH) programs is strongly preferred.
  • Skills: Demonstrated strong skills in nutritional counselling, anthropometry (measurement), and community mobilization.
  • Commitment: Must demonstrate a strong willingness to work extensively in rural communities and possess the flexibility for frequent travel within the project area.
