ITP Nurse at Taimaka Project

In the critical fight against severe acute malnutrition, the presence of skilled nursing professionals is often the deciding factor between crisis and recovery. In Gombe State, nurses at the front lines of Inpatient Therapeutic Programs provide more than just medical care; they offer a lifeline to the most vulnerable children and their families. Joining this mission means applying your clinical expertise to a cause where precision, compassion, and innovation converge to save lives every single day.

Job Summary

The ITP Nurse is a specialized clinical role dedicated to the intensive management of children suffering from complicated severe acute malnutrition. You will be responsible for the full spectrum of inpatient care—from rapid triage and admission to the administration of complex nutritional and medical treatments. Your goal is to provide high-quality, protocol-driven nursing care that ensures every child under your watch has the best possible path to a full recovery.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care & Patient Management

  • Emergency Triage: Monitor waiting areas to identify high-priority cases, perform immediate resuscitation when required, and facilitate urgent referrals to physicians.
  • Admission & Assessment: Manage the full admission process, including precise anthropometric measurements (weight/height) and identifying the specific degree and type of malnutrition.
  • Medication & Nutrition: Prepare and administer prescribed medications and therapeutic feeds (F-75/F-100) with absolute accuracy, strictly following clinical checklists.
  • Continuous Monitoring: Conduct daily patient rounds to track progress, update medical registers, and identify emerging emergencies to keep doctors informed in real-time.

Caregiver Support & Education

  • Family Guidance: Act as a primary point of contact for families, providing clear information regarding the hospitalization process and the child’s treatment plan.
  • Health Education: Conduct hygiene and nutrition workshops for mothers and caregivers to prevent relapse and support long-term health at home.

Facility & Team Operations

  • Quality Assurance: Strictly adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and clinical protocols to ensure zero errors in patient safety and data accuracy.
  • Resource Management: Oversee the maintenance and control of department-specific pharmacy stocks and medical equipment.
  • Capacity Building: Provide occasional training and mentorship to junior staff members to strengthen the overall quality of the nutrition program.

What Skills Are Needed?

  • Clinical Precision: An uncompromising ability to follow medical protocols and specialized nutrition SOPs without deviation.
  • Emergency Response: Sharp diagnostic skills to detect subtle changes in a child’s condition and respond with lifesaving speed.
  • Multilingualism: Professional fluency in English and Hausa is mandatory. Candidates with Fulfulde proficiency will be given significant preference.
  • Empathy & Communication: The ability to explain complex medical situations to stressed caregivers with kindness and clarity.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education: Registered Nurse (RN) qualification from a recognized institution. A BSc in Nursing is an added advantage.
  • Licensing: Must possess a valid, current nursing license with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).
  • Experience: 1–2 years of clinical nursing experience, with a strong preference for candidates who have worked in Inpatient care or Pediatrics.
  • Prerequisite: Completion of mandatory internship and NYSC service (certification required).
  • Added Value: Certifications in Community Health, Pediatrics, or specialized Nutrition are highly desirable.

Why This Job is Important

In the treatment of complicated malnutrition, the nurse is the primary guardian of the child’s recovery process. Doctors design the plan, but it is the nurse’s vigilance in triage, feeding, and medication that ensures the plan works. By maintaining high standards of data accuracy and clinical safety, you provide the evidence needed to improve malnutrition treatment across the entire humanitarian sector.

Benefits of Applying

  • Competitive Compensation: A monthly salary of 313,150 NGN, reflecting the high level of skill and responsibility required for this role.
  • Impact & Innovation: Work with an organization that uses your data to find smarter, more cost-effective ways to treat malnutrition globally.
  • Professional Security: A 2-year renewable contract provides a stable platform for career growth in the international NGO (INGO) sector.
