We have been working in Nigeria since 2017. In Northeast Nigeria and more specifically in Borno, Taraba and Adamawa States, MI is currently active in the WASH, Protection and FNSL sectors for saving and improving the lives of both the IDP/refugee populations as well as the host communities. The WASH activities focus on improved access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene which include NFI distribution, solarization of boreholes, rehabilitation of hand pumps, construction of latrines and hygiene promotion. The protection activities focus on prevention and response to Gender Based Violence (GBV) cases. The Food Nutrition Security and Livelihood interventions mainly focus on micro gardening, pullet rearing for egg production, composting and Nutrition (food demonstration, referrals of malnutrition cases to nutrition partners, and sensitization on nutrition). For our work in Maiduguri, Borno State Nigeria, Malteser International is looking for an experienced Food, Nutrition Security and Livelihood Assistant.

Under the direct supervision of the FNSL Manager, the Food Nutrition Security and Livelihood Assistant will be responsible for implementing FNSL activities in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria. Within the responsibilities, the Assistant will need to ensure compliance with Malteser International’s and donor guidelines to implement FNSL intervention.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the implementation of food, nutrition security and livelihood project
  • Collect data, develop reports including compliance with Malteser International
  • Build relationship with local partners and community

Participate in the implementation of food, nutrition security and livelihood project

  • Support FNSL needs assessment and identify the communities
  • Assist in the training of community mobilizers, and targeted beneficiaries.
  • Ensure the gender mainstreaming during the implementation of activities.
  • Assist in conducting house to house visits to monitor livestock and microgardening
  • Attend coordination meeting with the partners

Collect data, develop reports including compliance with Malteser International

  • Collect the data on a daily basis and prepare weekly internal reports,
  • Prepare weekly activities reports and submit them to the Sector Manager and Area Coordinator.
  • Participate in the archiving and the capitalization of the program’s documents.
  • Participate in the elaboration of the Survey adapted to the food nutrition security
  • Monitor the progress of activities and the impact of the FNS project
  • Propose possible improvements and adaptations of the approach.
  • Participate in the evaluation of project needs (HR, Finance, and Logistics)
  • Internally: follow hierarchical relationships in exchange of information, collaboration, and coordination
  • Externally: exchange of information, coordination, training, assessment of technical feasibilities with Local governmental and non-governmental partners as directed by the FNSL manager.

Building relationships with local partners and the community

  • Present the purpose of the project to the various local partners.
  • Liaise with community leaders, community mobilizers and the beneficiaries.
  • Maintain a positive relationship between the organization and the community.
  • Comply with Malteser International mandate, humanitarian principles and the current program.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • The Food Nutrition Security and Livelihood Assistant is required to be flexible and adaptable with regard to the implementation of the daily work/activities.
  • The Food Nutrition Security and Livelihood Assistant is also expected to conduct all duties in a professional manner following Malteser International staff regulations

Food Nutrition Security and Livelihood/Area Coordinator:

Report to the supervisor on all difficulties and relevant information, as well as all relevant issues concerning project implementation

Human Resources:

  • Coordinate with the MJK team on a daily base
  • Report to the supervisor all difficulties and relevant information, as well as all relevant issues concerning safety, security, IT and Supplies and HR issues in a timely manner.

General Conduct

Required Qualifications, Competencies, Knowledge, and Experience

  • At least 2 years of working experience with an INGO in a developing country and/or humanitarian context with a minimum of National Diploma in agriculture or Nutrition related field.
  • Excellent project management, partnership management, and coordination skills
  • Extensive field team management experience as well as security, safety, and resource management experience 
  • Proactive, resourceful, solutions- and results-oriented, with a genuine interest in learning 
  • Ability to work effectively with local governments, align with MI values and standards, and cope in stressful or hostile environments, including travelling to deep field locations and conducting partner visits
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the capacity to see the big picture and make sound judgments and decisions
  • Strong communication skills
