The Health Watch Foundation, operating as “Nigeria Health Watch” is a not-for-profit organization that aims to advocate for the health of Nigerians, strengthen the capacity of health sector organisations, enlighten Nigerians on good health habits and practices and to engage government towards good health policies. Our dual strengths in health and communication enable us to provide solutions for communications and advocacy in the health sector.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Content Quality Editor

Location: Abuja

Job Summary

  • The Content Quality Editor will play a crucial role in ensuring the highest quality of editorial content is published across all Nigeria Health Watch platforms. 
  • This role requires a meticulous editor with a strong understanding of health and journalism (including solutions journalism) and a passion for creating impactful and engaging content. 
  • S/he will be responsible for reviewing content, such as articles, developing strategies and style guidelines, approving story pitches, setting publication goals, and generating story ideas that are relevant to public health advocacy in Nigeria.

Scope of Services
Editorial Oversight:

  • Maintain and uphold Nigeria Health Watch’s editorial guidelines, ensuring all content adheres to journalistic standards of accuracy, clarity, and objectivity.
  • Supervise writers, provide constructive feedback, and ensure timely delivery of high-quality content.
  • Conduct thorough reviews of all published content, checking for accuracy, clarity, grammar, and style.
  • Oversee data quality in all editorial content, ensuring proper sourcing and referencing.

Content Strategy & Development:

  • Generate compelling story ideas and develop content strategies that resonate with our target audience and policy advocacy objectives.
  • Stay abreast of the latest developments in global health through research, reading, and networking with key stakeholders.
  • Explore and implement innovative content delivery and storytelling approaches, such as interactive formats, multimedia, and data journalism and visualization.

Editorial Leadership:

  • Chair editorial meetings, guiding discussions on content strategy, editorial priorities, and best practices.
  • Oversee the development and dissemination of editorial reports and analyses.

Freelancer Management:

  • Manage the solicitation, engagement, and evaluation of freelance and contract content developers.
  • Ensure the timely delivery of high-quality content from external contributors.

General:

  • Seek opportunities to develop collaborative partnerships with journalists, media houses, and other organizations to expand our reach and impact.
  • Explore strategies to grow Nigeria Health Watch’s subscriber base and diversify content offerings.
  • Support Partnership Team in meetings, brainstorming, proposal writing, strategy formulation
  • Provide support and leadership for projects and initiatives that entail working with journalists or leveraging media to achieve set goals.
  • Undertake additional tasks as assigned or needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, English, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in editing, journalism, or content strategy development and management, with a strong focus on the health sector or a related non-profit organization.
  • Proven ability to maintain high editorial standards and ensure accuracy and consistency.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Strong understanding of journalistic principles and ethical guidelines.
  • Experience with content management systems (CMS) and online publishing platforms, including basic knowledge of email marketing/newsletter platforms like MailChimp.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to provide leadership for a team
  • Understanding of project management tools for organizing and tracking work.
  • Experience with data journalism
  • Passion for public health communication and a commitment to improving health outcomes.
