Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) is an International, Private, Non-Governmental, Non-Profit Humanitarian Organization. Our organisation offers assistance to populations in distress, to victims of natural or man-made disasters, to victims of armed conflict, without discrimination irrespective of race, religion, creed or political affiliation. We have been working in Nigeria facilitated by a Memorandum of Understanding between Medecins Sans Frontieres and the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The French Section are at present co-operating with the Federal Ministry of Health, and State and Local government departments of health on various health projects. Our current focus is the VVF/Emergency Obstetrics Project in Jigawa State, the Provision of Primary Health Care in Borno State, and the Nutrition Project in Katsina State with coordination office in Abuja, Nigeria.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Laboratory Technician

Location:  Katsina
Employment Type: Full-time

Responsibilities

  • According to medical prescription, preparing and performing clinical exams/tests with appropriate techniques and following MSF protocols and procedures.

This function includes, among others:

  • Taking blood, vaginal and urethral samples.
  • Centrifuging blood and urine samples.
  • Performing laboratory exams (serology, haematology, biochemistry, bacteriology or parasitological, according to context of the mission).
  • Ensuring proper reporting and registration of the sample results to keep a written track of activity and give information to the relevant persons, ensuring confidentiality.
  • Taking care, manage and organize efficiently the laboratory material/equipment:
  • Perform cleaning and minor maintenance for biomedical equipment used. Following the user manual and protocols and alert supervisor in case of malfunctioning
  • Applying hygiene and safety protocols, doing daily cleaning /maintenance, sterilization, washing general glassware after procedures are done.
  • Ensuring proper sample waste disposal according to MSF protocols and highest safety standards.
  • Supplying orders, do stock, storage conditions follow-up, keep inventory.
  • Keeping organized the data collection system of laboratory results, and all information generated from the analysis done.
  • Reporting all relevant information linked to the activity in the laboratory to the line manager, especially the loss/robbery/damage of laboratory equipment or medicines.
  • Performing minor maintenance and cleaning of the biomedical equipment following user manual and protocols. Alerting the supervisor in case of malfunctioning of any device.
  • Spot check biochemistry machine.
  • Ensure the quality of the received sample
  • Operating the Spotchem analyzer
  • Performing daily calibration and quality control.
  • Reagent preparation and management
  • Routine maintenance,
  • Troubleshooting basic technical faults.
  • Ensuring result accuracy and reliability.
  • Participating in blood transfusion activity
  • Participating in recruitment process of blood donors
  • Conducting Transfusion Transmissible Infections(TTIs) screening of the potential blood donors
  • Bleeding the qualified blood donors
  • Crossmatching blood samples before taking the blood units to the wards
  • Ensuring that blood is kept in cold chain from the blood bank to the ward to maintain its therapeutic viability
  • Maintaining blood stock status at the blood bank in collaboration with the laboratory supervisor
  • Assisting the laboratory supervisor in organizing blood drives
  • Working collaboratively with the unit staff to trace patients’ relatives to come and replace blood
  • Doing quality controls on the Point Of Care (POC) devices used by the unit staff

  • Carrying out preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment

  • Full Blood Count (FBC) machine
  • Working collaboratively with the pharmacy in stock management of laboratory consumables
  • Participating in proper waste management of the laboratory wastes by following waste segregation protocols
  • Participating in laboratory data collection
  • Plus any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Requirements

  • Candidates should possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences / Radiography with 3 – 5 years of relevant work experience.
