Job Summary
The Accountant is responsible for the rigorous oversight of project finances, ensuring that all monetary transactions align with both international humanitarian standards and local legal requirements. You will manage the flow of funds, maintain the integrity of our accounting software, and provide the analytical insights necessary for sustainable project growth. Your expertise will guarantee that our medical teams are fully supported by a transparent, efficient, and compliant financial infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Cash Control
- Treasury Oversight: Supervise daily cash and check operations, ensuring that all disbursements are backed by verified documentation and authorized signatures.
- Audit-Ready Reconciliation: Conduct daily, weekly, and monthly physical cash counts and reconciliations to ensure that internal ledgers perfectly mirror actual holdings.
- Forex & Petty Cash: Manage currency exchange operations according to mission policy and investigate any discrepancies within petty cash boxes immediately.
- Expense Analysis: Track and analyze service contracts, utility bills, and vouchers to provide management with accurate, real-time cost data.
Accounting Systems & Compliance
- Digital Encoding: Utilize specialized accounting software (Unifield) to record transactions, ensuring high-quality data entry for month-end and year-end closures.
- Tax Administration: Calculate, collect, and remit all relevant statutory taxes to the appropriate authorities, ensuring the organization remains in good standing with local fiscal laws.
- Inter-Mission Transfers: Manage the encoding of salaries and internal fund transfers, matching advances with settlements to maintain a clean balance sheet.
- Policy Implementation: Serve as a technical resource to ensure all staff adhere to Financial Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) before any payments are processed.
Project Support & Documentation
- Budget Monitoring: Assist in cost analysis and budget tracking for new construction projects and medical initiatives.
- Digital Archiving: Organize the scanning and systematic filing of all financial vouchers and annexes, ensuring a seamless trail for internal and external audits.
- Proactive Reporting: Maintain a constant line of communication with supervisors regarding financial risks or performance hurdles.

Essential Skills & Qualifications
- Academic Foundation: A Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting is mandatory.
- Professional Credentials: Possession of a certification in Accounting, Finance, or Management (e.g., ICAN, ANAN) is highly desirable.
- Sector Experience: Minimum of 2 years in a professional accounting role. Preference is given to those who have worked with International NGOs or in challenging, field-based environments.
- Technical Savvy: Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with accounting software (knowledge of UniField is a significant advantage).
- Linguistic Ability: Fluent in English, Igbo, and Pidgin English (both written and spoken).
