Driving Policy Change through Advocacy
In the complex landscape of Northeast Nigeria, sustainable change for women and girls requires more than just service delivery; it requires shifting the policies and social norms that govern their lives. As an Advocacy Officer with Alimat Care Foundation, you will serve as the strategic voice for the marginalized, turning community needs into powerful policy demands. By engaging with duty-bearers and traditional leaders, you ensure that reproductive health rights are not just discussed, but protected by law and custom.
Job Summary
The Advocacy Officer will spearhead the movement-building and policy-influence components of our upcoming Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) project. Your role is to amplify the voices of women and youth, ensuring their priorities reach the ears of decision-makers and result in tangible improvements to local and state-level health outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
I. Strategic Advocacy and Policy Influence
- Strategy Design: Develop and execute comprehensive advocacy frameworks that align with project goals and address systemic barriers to SRHR.
- Policy Monitoring: Stay ahead of local and state legislative developments, providing real-time analysis on how policy shifts impact reproductive health rights.
- Engagement with Duty-Bearers: Lead high-level dialogues and policy roundtables with government officials, religious leaders, and traditional authorities to secure public commitments to SRHR.
II. Movement Building and Community Mobilization
- Empowering Local Voices: Support and mentor youth-led and women-led coalitions, providing them with the tools and platforms needed to lead their own advocacy initiatives.
- Coalition Participation: Represent the Foundation in broader civil society networks to ensure a unified and powerful front for reproductive justice.
- Public Engagement: Organize and facilitate public awareness campaigns and community forums that challenge harmful norms and promote social accountability.
III. Documentation and Knowledge Management
- Evidence-based Advocacy: Translate field data and project findings into persuasive policy briefs, position papers, and learning products.
- Impact Tracking: Meticulously document advocacy “wins,” policy changes, and official commitments influenced by the project for reporting and learning purposes.
- Standard Compliance: Ensure all advocacy efforts remain ethically grounded and compliant with both organizational values and local political sensitivities.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Academic Background: A Bachelor’s degree in Law, Political Science, Social Sciences, or International Development.
- Professional Experience: A minimum of 3 years in advocacy, civic engagement, or social accountability within the NGO sector.
- Technical Skills: * Mastery of the Microsoft Office Suite is mandatory for documentation and data management.
- Proven ability to navigate complex political environments and build relationships with government MDAs and traditional institutions.
- Communication: Exceptional persuasive writing and public speaking skills, with the ability to communicate complex rights-based concepts to diverse audiences.
- Language: Fluency in English is required; knowledge of local languages used in Adamawa State is a significant advantage.
Why This Job is Important
The Advocacy Officer is the bridge between the lived experience of a girl in a rural community and the legislative chambers where her rights are decided. Without strong advocacy, the root causes of inequality remain untouched. In this role, you are not just managing a project; you are building a legacy of accountability and justice that will protect the rights of girls long after the project concludes.
