Information Management & GIS Assistant (DTM) at International Organization for Migration (IOM) – 2 Locations

In the rapid flux of humanitarian emergencies, data is the compass that guides every life-saving decision. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and robust data management allow us to visualize where help is most needed, tracking the movements of displaced populations with precision and speed. By joining the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) team, you will be transforming raw statistics into the maps and infographics that enable the humanitarian community to navigate complex migration landscapes and deliver aid effectively.

Job Summary

The Information Management & GIS Assistant is responsible for the technical production, analysis, and dissemination of information regarding displacement activities in Nigeria. Working under the DTM Programme Officer, you will manage large-scale databases and use GIS tools to create high-quality information products that support strategic decision-making. Your role is central to ensuring that data sharing remains secure, accurate, and impactful across all IOM projects and partners.

Key Responsibilities

Data Systems and Database Management

  • Database Maintenance: Support the integrity of the DTM database, ensuring that data extraction processes are optimized for reliability and speed.
  • Assessment Support: Facilitate large-scale data collection and field assessments, ensuring the technical framework for gathering information is sound.
  • Confidentiality Protocols: Enforce IOM’s data protection guidelines to maintain absolute confidentiality while facilitating collaborative data sharing across departments.
  • System Optimization: Assist in the continuous improvement of physical and digital filing systems to ensure rapid information retrieval.

Visualization and Reporting

  • Map & Infographic Production: Support the Programme Officer in designing complex maps, infographics, and visual data representations that illustrate migration trends.
  • Report Generation: Prepare regular qualitative and quantitative reports that summarize DTM findings for stakeholders and governmental partners.
  • Data Entry: Maintain hands-on involvement in data entry when necessary to ensure the highest standards of data quality and accuracy.

Field Coordination and Training

  • Enumerator Guidance: Provide technical backstopping and support to field enumerators to troubleshoot data collection tools and improve survey quality.
  • Capacity Building: Assist in the organization and delivery of technical workshops and training sessions for staff and partners on IM and GIS tools.

Required Skills and Qualifications

Education & Professional Experience

  • Option A: A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, ICT, Statistics, GIS, or a related field with at least two years of relevant professional experience.
  • Option B: A Diploma in a related technical field with at least four years of relevant experience.
  • Humanitarian Background: Previous experience with an International Organization or NGO working with refugees or IDPs is a major advantage.

Technical Expertise

  • Mobile Data Collection: Advanced proficiency in ODK and KoboToolbox for field-based data gathering.
  • GIS & Databases: Basic knowledge of GIS tools (e.g., ArcGIS) and relational databases such as SQL Server-Spatial.
  • Statistical Analysis: Experience using software such as Excel, STATA, SPSS, or SAS to derive insights from complex datasets.
  • Creative Suites: Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator/InDesign) for high-end infographic design.

Core Competencies

  • Technical Communication: Ability to explain complex spatial or statistical data in an informative and motivational way.
  • Interpersonal Skills: A strong team player who can work under pressure with minimal supervision while meeting tight deadlines.

Why This Job is Important

An IM & GIS Assistant is the architect of the “Information Picture” for the entire North-East response. Without your maps and databases, humanitarian aid would be blind—unable to see where new displacement is occurring or where resources are being duplicated. Your work provides the visual proof of need that secures funding and directs trucks to the right villages.

Benefits of Applying

  • Global Impact: Work with the UN’s leading migration agency on the world-renowned DTM project.
  • Technical Growth: Enhance your skills in mobile data collection and spatial analysis within a high-pressure, real-world context.
  • Stable Contract: Secure a G-4 Special Short Term contract (up to 9 months) with the potential for renewal.

Salary Expectations

This position offers a competitive salary according to the IOM Nigeria General Service (G-4) scale.
