The Impact of Your Role
In the face of displacement and crisis, the provision of safe, dignified, and secure housing is not just a logistical necessity—it is a fundamental human right. As a Shelter Technical Supervisor, you will be on the front lines of humanitarian response, transforming technical blueprints into physical sanctuaries for vulnerable families. Your expertise ensures that displaced populations in Nigeria have access to structures that are safe, culturally appropriate, and built to last, directly contributing to the stability and recovery of affected communities.
Job Summary
The Shelter Technical Supervisor serves as the primary technical link between program design and field implementation. You will be responsible for overseeing the rigorous quality control, onsite supervision, and technical reporting of shelter construction and site improvement projects. Your mission is to ensure that every structure meets international humanitarian standards while providing essential technical guidance to site workers and local partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Oversight & Quality Assurance: Lead the onsite supervision of all construction and site development activities, ensuring that every phase of the project adheres to approved engineering designs, safety protocols, and humanitarian quality standards.
- Site Assessment & Planning: Conduct comprehensive pre-construction site evaluations to inform urban planning and site layout, interpreting complex technical drawings and specifications to recommend the most efficient and culturally suitable construction methodologies.
- Material & Resource Management: Verify the integrity, quantity, and quality of all construction materials delivered to sites; coordinate closely with logistics and warehouse teams to report and rectify any discrepancies or non-conformities immediately.
- Onsite Team Leadership: Provide direct technical mentorship and daily supervision to carpenters, laborers, and contractors, ensuring high-level craftsmanship and strict adherence to occupational health and safety regulations.
- Reporting & Documentation: Maintain meticulous project records, including progress photos, status reports, and site logs; prepare regular updates for senior management regarding milestones, challenges, and potential delays.
- Financial & Technical Support: Contribute to the development of Bills of Quantities (BoQs), conduct market price assessments for construction materials, and perform damage assessments or dilapidation schedules for existing structures.
- Community Engagement: Act as a technical liaison to local communities and stakeholders, explaining project interventions clearly to foster local ownership and ensure the project meets the specific needs of the residents.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Academic Background: A Diploma or higher in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, or a closely related field from an accredited institution is essential.
- Industry Experience: A minimum of 2 years of professional experience in construction and contract management is required, with a strong preference for candidates who have worked within the humanitarian or international development sector.
- Regional Expertise: At least 2 years of professional experience working within Africa is mandatory.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in architectural/engineering design software, MS Office Suite, and the use of GPS devices for site mapping.
- Communication & Language: Full professional fluency in English is required. Additionally, candidates must be fluent in Hausa, Kanuri, and Pidgin to effectively communicate with local populations and workers.
Why This Role Matters
In Nigeria’s complex humanitarian landscape, shelter is often the first step toward restoring a sense of normalcy for displaced persons. This role is vital because it bridges the gap between high-level planning and real-world execution. By ensuring technical excellence, you prevent structural failures, optimize limited resources, and ensure that aid reaches those who need it most in a form that is both safe and sustainable.
