The African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) is a non-profit networking and service alliance of Field Epidemiology (and Laboratory) Training Programs (FELTPs), and other applied epidemiology training programs. AFENET has operations in over 31 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa or the World Health Organisation Africa Region (WHO – AFRO). Established in 2005, AFENET is dedicated to helping Ministries of Health in Africa build strong, effective, sustainable programs and capacity to improve public health systems on the African continent.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Technical Officer, Pharmacovigilance

Location: Abuja

Job Purpose

  • The Technical Officer – Pharmacovigilance will provide technical expertise and coordination in implementing pharmacovigilance systems and safety surveillance activities across African Union (AU) Member States.
  • Under the guidance of the Senior Pharmacovigilance Technical Officer, the officer will support initiatives aimed at improving medication safety and strengthening pharmacovigilance frameworks within the African continent.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
The Technical Officer – Pharmacovigilance shall:

  • Provide technical expertise and coordination in implementing pharmacovigilance systems and safety surveillance activities across AU Member States.
  • Support initiatives aimed at improving medication safety and strengthening pharmacovigilance frameworks within the African continent, under the guidance of the Senior Pharmacovigilance Technical Officer.
  • Contribute to developing and updating pharmacovigilance policies, guidelines, and frameworks for Africa.
  • Organize and facilitate training programs, workshops, and capacity-building initiatives in pharmacovigilance and safety monitoring.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of pharmacovigilance systems and recommend improvements.
  • Stay informed about global developments in pharmacovigilance and provide technical advice to AU Member States to ensure adherence to international standards.
  • Represent Africa CDC in regional and international forums related to pharmacovigilance and medication safety.

Qualification and Work Experience Required
Education:

  • Master’s degree in Pharmacovigilance and Pharmaco epidemiology, Clinical Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Public Health, or a related field from a recognized institution with 2 years of professional experience in the field.
    OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Pharmacy, Public Health, or a related field from a recognized institution with 5 years of experience in the field.
  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD), PhD in Pharmacovigilance and Pharmaco epidemiology, Clinical Pharmacy, Public Health, or a closely related field from a recognized institution with 2 years of experience in the field (this is an added advantage).
  • Additional certifications or specialized training in pharmacovigilance, regulatory science, or medication safety are desirable.
  • At least three years of experience in roles involving technical support, program implementation, or stakeholder coordination.
  • Prior experience working with national regulatory authorities or regional health organizations is advantageous.

Required Skills and Competencies:
Functional Skills:

  • Demonstrated experience in implementing and monitoring pharmacovigilance systems.
  • Knowledge of public health programs, particularly in strengthening pharmaceutical systems.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to contribute to project planning, management, and evaluation.
  • Technical writing skills, including reporting and documentation preparation.
