In Nigeria, GIZ’s portfolio includes among others, a programme to support the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in its regional integration goals. The programme aims to strengthen sector-specific capacities in the areas of Peace and Security, Customs and Trade as weir as Strategic Management and Organizational Development in the ECOWAS Commission.

Job Title: Technical Advisor – Peacebuilding & Conflict Transformation

- Since 2004, GIZ has maintained a country office in the capital city Abuja. Currently 466
- national and 63 international employees, 37 regional staff, 4 integrated specialists and 3 development workers are working in the country (January 2025).
The Project
Strengthening capacities for peacebuilding and conflict resolution in North-Central Nigeria (PEACECORE):
- The transitional development assistance (TDA) project Strengthening Capacities for Conflict Transformation and Livelihood for Groups in Vulnerable Situations in Nigeria’s Central Zone, financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) aims to strengthen conditions for conflict transformation in Plateau State in Central Nigeria.
- Conflicts have escalated in recent years, and the displacement and insecurity as a result cause negative impact on agricultural and livestock farming, as well as livelihoods in general.
- Value chains are disrupted, and the rural population’s self – sufficiency capacities are diminished. In support to conflict transformation and prevention, the project works to promote peaceful coexistence, inclusive peacebuilding, sustainable livelihoods and food security.
- The project has a duration of 4 years (November 2023- November 2027) and pursues a participatory and inclusive approach.
Responsibilities & Tasks
Responsibilities
- Under the supervision of the Head of Project, the Technical Advisor coordinates activities of the office in Abuja and supports project implementation.
Tasks
Advisory support:
- Helps identify the needs of communities, government institutions and, as well as the role of the youth in the prevention of radicalization and improvement of social cohesion in selected communities within Kaduna and Taraba.
- Provides technical advice and support to the partners and other stakeholders in Taraba and Kaduna States on the relevant thematic areas of the Project, including early warning and early response systems.
- Clearly conceptualize measures or approaches where required ahead of implementation.
- Plan and organise meetings and activities of the Peacebuilding and Conflict Transformation Field of Action in Kaduna and Taraba.
- Participates in Project internal meetings and activities and provide support as may be requested and/or delegated.
- Prepares and deliver presentations for purposes both within and external to the Project.
- Engages in the context monitoring conflict and security trends in Kaduna and Taraba.
- Travels to Kaduna, Taraba or beyond, as may be required.
- Contributes to the learning and innovations efforts of the PEACECORE Programme through regular implementation debriefs and other formats.
- Closely coordinates implementation approaches and cross-cutting areas with the Peacebuilding and Conflict Transformation Advisors in Jos and Abuja.
Project Management:
- Supports the day-to-day operational activities of the PEACECORE Programme related to Taraba and Kaduna interventions.
- Develop operational plans and budgets while ensuring implementation and maintenance of communication with relevant PEACECORE partners.
- Provides administrative and logistical support for activity implementation in the Peacebuilding and Conflict Transformation Field of Action.
- Prepares and manages requests for grants and consultancy contracts. He/she maintains good liaison with consultants and supports quality management of services and tasks.
Communication and networking:
- Develops and maintains contact with all important stakeholders.
- Provides technical assistance to local and international experts.
- Ensures knowledge management, processes and distributes relevant information.
- Engages in coordination and networking with other GIZ sister programmes and other relevant stakeholders.
Other duties/additional tasks:
- Will be required to travel frequently to Kaduna and Taraba States. If the need subsequently arises, the duty station may change to Jalingo.
- Will perform other duties and tasks at the request of management.
Required Qualifications, Competences, and Experience
Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Humanities, Political or Social Sciences, With a focus on conflict transformation, peacebuilding, or political violence.
Professional Experience:
- Minimum 5 years’ professional experience in a comparable position.
- Solid knowledge conflict transformation tools.
- Previous experience in GIZ would be an added advantage.
- Understanding of gender-transformative approaches.
- Familiarity with administration of contracts and financing agreements / grants is desirable.
- Strong understanding of cultural aspects of Farmer / Herder conflict in Nigeria and West Africa.
- Excellent individual management skills, regarding time management, workload, and responsibilities.
Other knowledge, additional competences:
- Good working knowledge of ITC technologies (related software, email) and computer applications (e.g. MS Office)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Attention to detail, and time management abilities.
- Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
- Willingness to learn new skills and adapt to changing requirements.
- Willingness to Travel: The role may require travel to intervention areas of the program, in particular Kaduna and Taraba States. The candidate should be both willing and able to undertake such travel.
Salary
According to GIZ salary scale for Band 4
