The Chevening Scholarship is a prestigious, fully funded UK government scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign,Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations, that enables outstanding emerging leaders from over 160 countries to pursue a one-year master’s degree at any accredited UK university.
The programme, established in 1983, aims to build a global network of future leaders, decision-makers, and opinion formers who will drive positive change in their home countries and globally.
In 2024, the programme celebrated its 40th anniversary.
Applications for the Chevening Scholarships 2026-27 are currently open, with the deadline set for 7 October 2025.
The award covers tuition, living allowance, travel, and more for a one-year master’s degree at any UK university. Interested persons should review the criteria and apply early.
Every year, the Chevening Scholarship brings together bright minds from around the globe and sends them off to study in the United Kingdom. For the 2026-2027 academic year, the door is wide open again. It’s more than a grant, it’s a chance to spend a year learning, living, and connecting in a place where cobbled streets and libraries carry centuries of stories.
This scholarship isn’t only about the degree. It’s the people you meet over cups of tea, the cold walks to class, the small talks in corridors, and that feeling of being far from home yet oddly at home.
Requirements and eligibility
- Are a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory (NIGERIA and Other African countries are eligible)
- Promise to return to your home country for at least two years after the scholarship ends
- Have at least two years of work experience (about 2,800 hours) Only work experience gained after the date of your graduation will count
- Hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for a UK master’s programme
- Apply to three eligible UK master’s courses and secure an unconditional offer from at least one by the set deadline
Having a master’s isn’t a barrier
Already have a master’s? That’s not a deal-breaker. You can still apply for another, as long as you can clearly show how it links to your work goals and how it could help you make a difference back home.
