Purpose of the Position

  • The Protection Monitoring & Mobilization Assistant will support the implementation of protection monitoring and community mobilization activities aimed at identifying protection risks, strengthening community protection mechanisms, and facilitating safe access to protection services.
  • Working under the supervision of the Protection Officer or Protection Team Lead, the assistant will conduct protection monitoring, support community engagement and sensitization activities, identify individuals at risk, and facilitate referrals to appropriate service providers.
  • The role will contribute to ensuring that protection risks are systematically monitored, documented, and addressed, while promoting protection principles, safeguarding standards, and inclusive community participation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Protection Monitoring & Field Implementation
  • Conduct regular protection monitoring visits to targeted communities to identify protection risks, vulnerabilities, and emerging trends.
  • Support the collection and documentation of protection monitoring data using FRAD-approved tools.
  • Identify protection concerns affecting vulnerable populations including women, children, older persons, and persons with disabilities.
  • Support the analysis and reporting of protection risks to inform program responses.
  • Promote safe and ethical engagement with communities while respecting confidentiality and protection principles.
  • Support the identification of individuals requiring specialized protection services.

Community Mobilization & Engagement

  • Mobilize community members to participate in protection awareness sessions and community dialogues.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with community leaders, women’s groups, youth groups, and community volunteers.
  • Support community-based protection structures such as community protection committees and focal points.
  • Facilitate community discussions on protection risks, rights awareness, and available services.
  • Encourage community participation in identifying protection concerns and community-led solutions.
  • Promote the active participation of women, youth, and persons with disabilities in community protection activities.

Case Identification & Referral

  • Identify individuals at risk of protection violations during field visits and community engagement activities.
  • Facilitate safe and confidential referrals to relevant service providers including:
  • GBV service providers
  • Child protection actors
  • Health facilities
  • Psychosocial support services
  • Legal assistance providers
  • Support documentation of referrals while ensuring confidentiality and survivor-centered approaches.
  • Follow up on referrals in coordination with protection actors where appropriate.

Protection Awareness & Capacity Building

  • Support community sensitization sessions on topics including:
  • Protection risks and prevention of violence
  • Gender-Based Violence (GBV) awareness
  • Child protection and safeguarding
  • Rights of vulnerable populations
  • Available protection services and referral pathways
  • Assist in distributing and explaining protection awareness materials within communities.
  • Support orientation sessions for community volunteers and protection focal points.
  • Promote awareness of safeguarding, accountability to affected populations (AAP), and community feedback mechanisms.

Reporting, Documentation & Coordination

  • Maintain accurate documentation of protection monitoring findings, community activities, and referrals.
  • Contribute to weekly and monthly field reports by providing timely updates on protection concerns and community engagement activities.
  • Share emerging protection risks and community feedback with the Protection Officer or Protection Manager.
  • Participate in internal coordination meetings and protection sector activities when required.
  • Support the MEAL team during monitoring visits, assessments, and data collection.

Operational Support

  • Support planning and implementation of field missions and community protection activities.
  • Ensure proper documentation of attendance sheets, monitoring tools, and activity reports.
  • Assist in logistical arrangements for community activities and sensitization sessions.
  • Ensure compliance with FRAD safeguarding policies, humanitarian principles, and protection mainstreaming standards.

Required Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Diploma or bachelor’s degree in social work, Social Sciences, Law, Human Rights, Development Studies, or related field.
  • At least 1–2 years of experience in protection monitoring, community mobilization, or humanitarian programming.
  • Experience working in conflict-affected or humanitarian contexts, preferably in Northeast Nigeria.
  • Basic understanding of protection principles, community-based protection, and referral pathways.
  • Experience conducting community mobilization, awareness sessions, or protection monitoring activities.
  • Good documentation and reporting skills.
  • Fluency in English; knowledge of Hausa and/or Kanuri is highly desirable.
  • Willingness to work in remote and hard-to-reach communities.

Desirable

  • Experience working on Protection Monitoring or Community-Based Protection (CBP) programmes.
  • Familiarity with humanitarian coordination mechanisms and referral pathways in Borno
  • Experience working on donor-funded humanitarian projects
  • Knowledge of Safeguarding, Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP), and protection mainstreaming principles.
