Programme Monitoring and Improvement (PMI) Coordinator at Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition
The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is a Swiss-based foundation launched at the UN in 2002 to tackle the human suffering caused by malnutrition. Working with both governments and businesses, we aim to transform food systems so that they deliver more nutritious food for all people. In particular, we aim to make healthier food choices more desirable, more available, and more affordable. GAIN’s mission is to advance nutrition outcomes by improving consumption of nutritious and safe food for all people, especially the most vulnerable to malnutrition.
We are recruiting to fill the position below:
Job Title: Programme Monitoring and Improvement (PMI) Coordinator
Location: Abuja
Job type: Full-time (Hybrid)
Travel required: 40%
Overall Purpose
- The position will be responsible for coordinating project monitoring across the GAIN Nigeria project portfolio.
- The role will support the design and implementation of Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) frameworks.
- The position holder will coordinate the generation of credible evidence on programme performance and facilitate the synthesis of knowledge required to inform decisions, strengthen programme learning, improve programme design and effectiveness, and meet donor reporting requirements.
- The position will report to the Programme Monitoring and Improvement Manager, GAIN Nigeria and work closely with the Knowledge Leadership (KL) and Country Programme Teams.
Tasks and Responsibilities
Programme monitoring and improvement:
- In collaboration with the PMI Manager, KL, and Programme Teams, develop, review, and implement programme theories of change, logic models, results frameworks, and MEAL plans.
- Facilitate consistent collection, cleaning, analysis, interpretation, and visualization of monitoring data to generate actionable insights for the programme team.
- Ensure that field data collection processes are ethical and aligned with recognized research methodologies.
- Conduct data quality audits and validation checks to ensure accuracy, completeness, consistency, and reliability of programme monitoring data across implementation sites.
- Collaborate with MIS Specialist to ensure real time analysis and disaggregation, of performance data to support programme reporting and decision making.
- Ensure knowledge products from monitoring activities are timely, reliable, accessible, and actionable.
- Contribute to the implementation of the country Learning Agenda by capturing programme lessons, synthesizing learning outputs, and informing programme and strategy adaptations.
Reporting and stakeholder engagement:
- Work with the PMI Manager, KL, and Programme Teams to develop concise and visually engaging knowledge products (dashboards, infographics, reports, briefs, publications etc.) tailored to different audiences, ensuring they are timely, reliable, accessible, and actionable.
- Support the integration of knowledge products and monitoring insights into programme planning, implementation, and review processes to improve the quality of programme decisions.
- Support the dissemination of monitoring insights to programme teams and other relevant stakeholders, including the interpretation of key findings and follow-up on agreed actions.
- Contribute to the development of project reports that meet internal quality standards and donor reporting requirements.
- Collaborate with the PMI Manager to ensure timely, accurate, and high-quality routine monitoring and reporting by implementing partners.
- Provide technical MEAL guidance to the PMI officers, programme teams and implementing partners to ensure shared understanding of MEL expectations, consistent application of MEAL standards and continuous capacity development.
- Contribute to the development of annual work plans and budgets, ensuring MEAL requirements are adequately reflected.
Research:
- In collaboration with the PMI Manager and KL team, support the coordination of research activities implemented by external research partners, ensuring alignment with research protocols, delivery of agreed milestones, and timely submission of high-quality outputs.
- Support the review of research tools and reports submitted by external research partners, ensuring they adequately address the agreed research questions and generate evidence that informs programme design, strategic decision making, and adaptive learning.
- Participate in the dissemination of programme learnings through various platforms, including the preparation of papers for the GAIN Paper Series, publications, presentations, and related knowledge-sharing outputs.
- Support the integration of research findings into programme learning processes.
- People and team management
- Supervise the Programme Monitoring and Improvement Officers and relevant implementing partner staff involved in programme monitoring activities.
- Monitor the performance of direct reports, provide routine feedback, and complete required performance reviews.
- Coach and mentor direct reports and contribute to strengthening their technical capacity in MEAL.
Key Organizational Relationships
- Reports to the PMI Manager, GAIN Nigeria.
- Works closely with Programme, Communications, KL and Country Management Team (CMT) at GAIN.
- Liaises with implementing partners, government, and other external stakeholders.
Job Requirements
Educational Qualification:
- A Degree in Statistics, Demography, Public Health, Nutrition, Development Studies, Economics or a related discipline.
- Professional certifications in MEAL, advanced data analytics and project management.
Experience:
- Experience designing and implementing monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning systems for development programmes.
- Experience conducting research using qualitative and quantitative methods.
- Experience supervising staff or providing technical oversight to a team.
Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of project management.
- Proficiency in statistical analysis tools such as SPSS, Stata, R, and Python, and data visualization tools such as Power BI and Tableau.
- Practical understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methods.
- Strong analytical and creative problem-solving abilities.
- Strong report writing skills with the ability to communicate results clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.
- Effective stakeholder coordination.
- Strong team collaboration skills, with ability to work effectively as part of a global multicultural team.
- Organized and able to effectively prioritize tasks, manage deliverables, and meet deadlines.
Other Requirements:
- Willingness and ability to travel frequently to the field.
- Fluency in English, written and verbal.
